2026 Girls State Attendee Selected

The American Legion Auxiliary Waverly Unit 176 has selected its attendee for the 2026 Girls State program, which will be held June 14–19 on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Girls State provides young women from across Iowa the opportunity to learn about government at the local, county, and state levels. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship. While the program focuses primarily on government and civic engagement, there is also time set aside for social activities and fun.

The 2026 attendee is Isabelle Luck, daughter of Lyndsi and Nate Luck of Waverly. Isabelle is currently a junior at Waverly-Shell Rock High School.

Following her participation in Girls State and graduation from Waverly-Shell Rock, Isabelle will receive the George and Kathleen Beebe Girls State Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. The scholarship is awarded in two installments during her freshman and sophomore years of college or trade school.

The American Legion Auxiliary extends its appreciation to all the young women who applied for the opportunity to attend Girls State this summer.

Students who will be juniors next year and are interested in attending the 2027 Girls State program are encouraged to watch local publications and their school email for application details. Distributing poppies is not for the weak! You can ask Geri, one of our newest members at only six months! Can you believe there have been three new junior member added to our unit since her? we would love to add more junior members! Ask us how!

We are out distributing poppies for donations today. Swing by and visit baby Geri and I at Fairway in Waverly or swing by and see Maxine and Vera at Hy-Vee in Waverly! We will be out until 6 tonight and tomorrow morning, we will be out at both locations from 9:30 to 11:30!

Watch for these ladies next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Waverly’s Fareway and Hy-Vee! The ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary will be distributing poppies in exchange for donations.

The ladies will be serving up dinner tonight at the Waverly Vet post. We’re anxious to see everyone there come and meet our second youngest member of the American Legion auxiliary as she’ll be helping alongside her mama.

The American Legion Auxiliary is providing the Thursday Night Meal this week! 🍽

We are open to the public, but prefer reservations so we know how many meals to prepare. The WAVP regular menu is not available to order from.

It is that time of the year again. The Waverly American Legion Auxiliary is extending an invitation for the Waverly-Shell Rock Junior girls to apply for Girls State 2026. The Waverly American Legion Auxiliary Unit 176 covers the cost of room and board for two girls to attend. Please note that applications must be in by 8pm on Friday, February 27th!
