Mental Health Matters: Today, Tomorrow, Always!!

Harris County Mental Health Day was truly a blast—full of joy, connection, and a powerful reminder of what happens when a community comes together with purpose.

If you missed it, you missed an incredible opportunity to see mental health brought out of the shadows and into the center of community life.

A heartfelt thank you to New Horizons Behavioral Health for hosting such a meaningful event and for continuing to shine a light on the importance of caring for our mental and emotional well-being. This gathering wasn’t just an event—it was a statement that mental health matters, and it matters for everyone.

A large part of the day focused on welcoming the community into the mental health space in a real and approachable way, while also honoring and thanking the many partners whose collaboration and support make this work possible. Harris County organizations showed up in full force, turning the day into a beautiful opportunity for networking, fellowship, and shared commitment to stronger families.

And it wasn’t all serious—there was something for everyone: great food, uplifting music, engaging vendors, and a powerful Community Awards segment that celebrated those making a difference right here at home.

The impact of mental health truly ripples outward into every area of life. When we support mental wellness, we strengthen families, improve physical health, support our schools, and build more resilient communities. Mental and physical health are not separate—they are equally important pillars of overall well-being.

Days like this remind us that healing, hope, and wholeness grow stronger when we come together.

Just Can't Stop Counting My Blessings!!!!
Every year, as we begin planning our Community Pool Party & Back-to-School Rush, I am reminded that faith without action is just a dream. So we pray, step out in faith, and trust that God will provide.

And every year, He does.

People often see the smiling children receiving backpacks filled with school supplies, but they don't always see the village that comes together behind the scenes to make it happen.

It starts with our amazing school counselors who take the time to share school supply lists so we know exactly what our students need. Then our community partners come together to plan an event that helps children start the school year prepared, confident, and excited to learn.

This month, I was blessed to witness that village in action.

A huge shoutout to Pastor Ashley Dobbs, Melvin Spratling, and the members of the historic Bethany Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Mountain. They answered the call to serve by helping us sort and count donated school supplies so we could determine what is still needed. Under Melvin's leadership, the team accomplished in one afternoon what might have taken days to complete.

Now comes the next challenge—gathering enough supplies to fill more than 460 backpacks for Harris County children.

The good news? The team at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church is already preparing to help pack those backpacks once the supplies arrive.

That is what community looks like.

That is what service looks like.

That is what love in action looks like.

Harris County, we are truly blessed to be part of a village that believes every child deserves the opportunity to walk into school ready to succeed.

But we need your help.

Prices have increased, and the need is greater than ever. We are asking our community to join us by donating school supplies or making a monetary donation to help purchase needed items.

📚 Every notebook matters.
✏️ Every pencil matters.
🎒 Every backpack matters.
❤️ Every donation matters.

Most importantly, every child matters.

Please check out the school supply list on the flyer and consider helping us ensure that every child starts the school year with the tools they need to succeed.

We also need drop off locations across the county. A big shoutout to Pine Mountain Tourism-they have agreed to be a drop off site.

Together, through faith, partnership, and community, we can make a difference—one backpack at a time.

A Community Treasure Worth Supporting!

We are truly blessed to have the Harris County Public Library in our community. It is so much more than a building filled with books. Every corner, every shelf, and every nook holds treasures waiting to be discovered by children, teens, adults, and seniors alike.

Our library creates amazing programs that inspire a love of reading, learning, creativity, and lifelong curiosity. Literacy is the foundation of success, helping children thrive in school, preparing adults for the workforce, and strengthening our entire community.

But these opportunities don't happen without community support.

Please consider supporting the library by purchasing a raffle ticket for this beautiful handmade dinosaur-themed quilt generously donated by Beth Strange. Every ticket purchased helps fund library programs, collections, and services that benefit all of us.

🎟️ Tickets: $5 each or 5 for $20
📅 Drawing Date: July 31
📍 Available at the Harris County Public Library circulation desk

Please share this post widely and make a plan to support our library. Together, we can help ensure that literacy, learning, and imagination continue to grow in Harris County for generations to come.

WE ARE COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS!

One of the greatest blessings in any community is knowing that our seniors are cared for.

A huge THANK YOU to the Area Agency on Aging of River Valley Regional Commission for bringing the Georgia Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program back to Harris County!

Did you know that senior hunger impacts millions of older adults every year? Access to fresh fruits and vegetables can improve nutrition, help manage chronic health conditions, and support healthier, more active lives. That's why this program is so important.

Through the Georgia Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program, eligible seniors age 60 and older can get fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey while supporting Georgia farmers at the same time! ❤️

God provides through people, partnerships, and opportunities like this.

"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him." — Psalm 34:8

📢 IMPORTANT: Seniors MUST sign up so our farmers know how much food to bring.

📅 Sign-Up Day: June 17, 2026 | 9 AM–12 PM
📍 Harris County Family Connection Office

📅 Food Distribution: July 28, 2026 | 9 AM–12 PM
📍 Bobby Lowman Recreation Center

⚠️ Funding has been reduced this year and vouchers are LIMITED. Participation is strictly FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED.

Please share this flyer with seniors, caregivers, churches, family members, and friends. A simple share could help put fresh, healthy food on someone's table.

Let's give a BIG shout-out to the Area Agency on Aging and River Valley Regional Commission for continuing to invest in the health and well-being of our seniors.

Together, we can make sure our seniors are nourished, valued, and reminded that they are not forgotten.

BACK 2 SCHOOL 2026 – IT TAKES A VILLAGE!

I was sitting at my desk reviewing plans for this year's Back 2 School Supply Drive when I decided to check the prices of school supplies.

What I found made me stop for a moment.

Some of the items our children need most have doubled, tripled, and in some cases even quadrupled in price.

For just a second, fear whispered, "This is going to be hard."

But I don't operate in a spirit of fear. I operate in faith, power, love, and a sound mind.

Because here's what I know: our children will still walk into classrooms this August. They will still have dreams. They will still need notebooks, pencils, binders, crayons, scissors, and backpacks. They will still deserve every opportunity to succeed.

And that's why we do school supply drives.

We don't do them because it's easy.

We do them because no child should start the school year wondering if they have the tools they need to learn.

We do them because a backpack filled with supplies sends a powerful message: "Harris County believes in you."

We do them because families are already making difficult choices between groceries, rent, utilities, and school expenses.

Most importantly, we do them because we are the village.

❤️ A village that loves.
❤️ A village that shares.
❤️ A village that cares.

Today, we're asking you to help us support children from Head Start through 12th Grade by donating school supplies from the list on the attached flyer.

💙🌱 COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS AT CLUBHOUSE AT THE LAKES 🌱💙

Every Thursday, something special happens at Clubhouse at the Lakes.

Children arrive ready for fun, learning, friendship, and adventure. Volunteers show up with servant hearts. Community partners bring resources, encouragement, and support. And together, we create a place where children are loved, valued, and given opportunities to grow.

As I look around each week, I am reminded that blessings are often found in the simple things.

🍽️ A hot meal shared among friends.

🎂 A birthday celebration that makes every child feel seen and special.

🥕 Fresh vegetables picked from a community garden planted with love.

📚 Learning opportunities that spark curiosity and imagination.

😊 Smiles, laughter, and caring adults who consistently show up.

A special thank you to the Town of Waverly Hall for providing the Melody Lakes Community Center, a welcoming space where our children can gather, learn, play, and build lasting memories. Community spaces like this are more than buildings—they are places where relationships are formed, lives are impacted, and villages are strengthened.

Thank you to Melody Lakes Community Outreach, especially Bear, Dennis, and the Outreach members, for providing a hot meal at our monthly birthday celebrations and for helping create and maintain our children's community garden. Every week our kiddos get to enjoy the bounty of their hard work and God's provision.

Thank you to the Harris County School District for bringing the Mobile Learning Lab, along with an amazing teacher and driver who make learning exciting and engaging.

Thank you to Pastor Kevin and The Refuge Church family for the abundance of snacks that keep our children fueled and happy.

And to our faithful volunteers—Ms. Salgado, Ms. Pennie, Ms. Marlyn, and Ms. Wendy—thank you for the countless hours, the encouraging words, and the love you pour into our children week after week.

Most importantly, thank you to the children and families who trust us to be part of their journey. You are the heart of Clubhouse at the Lakes.

Each act of kindness may seem small on its own, but together they create something extraordinary. One meal, one volunteer, one garden, one lesson, one encouraging word at a time—we are building something beautiful for our children.

📖 "Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done... if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered." — Psalm 40:5

Today, we're counting our blessings—and there are simply too many to number.
