Thankful for the warm days and sunshine for the big boy, Rocket. Rocket lost his eyesight a couple of years ago and has done very well with that major change.... But he has been declining over the last five weeks, has lost weight and sleeps a lot. He perks up when he hears his caregiver’s voice and still enjoys his grain and peppermints. It makes the heart ache but there is comfort in seeing this unfold in May rather than in December. He has been with Razorback the longest- 26 years and is a favorite of the many who have visited over the years due to his size (over 17 hands) and his puppy dog personality. We love you, Rocket! ❤️

Update on Sherman

The little guy passed away early this morning. I begged him to stay, but his little body couldn’t do it. Although he had been diagnosed with colic, there had to have been a more serious underlying issue that had been going on for a couple of months. We tried our best to figure out what was going on with the little man.

There is a lot of death when you run a rescue and retirement home for animals. It is always difficult to say goodbye to these very special beings… But sometimes when I sit with them, I tell them that I love them, thank them for loving me, and that it is ok for them to go now.

Sherman was different, I begged him to stay- I told him that Ozzy and I needed him to stay on this earth a lot longer. Last night, he stopped nickering when he saw me, and I knew that today would be a tough day of decisions. Either to haul him into the clinic (his balance was off so I was hesitant to do that) or to make even tougher decisions. I thank him for not having me make that choice.

Sherman truly was a gift. He was adorable, gentle, sweet, funny, chatty, and teeny tiny. He lived alone for many years and when he came to Razorback he had the longest, grown out hooves I had ever seen.
He was Mama’s (mini horse who was blind) caregiver until her death in January.
Then Ozzy- the beautiful, blind, gentle giant became Shermy’s roommate, patient and best friend. Ozzy is so big that Sherm could walk underneath him (or maybe it was that Sherman was so tiny).

Sherman was loved by everyone who met him- humans and animals. He was one in a million.

As my dad would say “He is in that great pasture in the sky now”

I love you, Sherm ❤️💔

Little Sherman, everyone’s best friend (especially Ozzy’s) has all of us nervous today as we wait out his colic diagnosis. (Sherman suffers from a metabolic issue, as well, which he is being treated for)..
He didn’t eat his feed last night or this morning and was not himself, so Dr. Tom from Athens Veterinary Clinic came out to check out the tiny boy. After resting (he was given a mild sedative) and waiting for the pain meds and mineral oil to kick in, we now will walk approximately 10-15 minutes every hour or so.
This was his first walk (he has shavings in his coat from snoozing in the stall) and it was cut a bit short due to him still feeling the effects of the sedative. He is back in his stall resting again.

All we can do is wait and hope that he begins to feel better, drinks water, produces manure.. all that fun stuff. If he worsens, a stay at the clinic might be next.

He is a very special boy here at the rescue and his bestie, Ozzy, needs him to get better to be his roomie again.

Please donate to help with Sherman’s ongoing veterinary costs ❤️
