Waupaca Foundry's Corporate Sustainability Manager, Bryant Esch, has been honored with the 2024 Childress-Loebler Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Foundry Society. Recognized for his leadership in improving environmental, health, and safety standards, Esch has been instrumental in advancing the Foundry’s energy and decarbonization efforts, achieving milestones such as a 21% reduction in energy intensity, a 71% reduction in water use, and the first U.S. metalcaster CDP report. Some big changes could be coming down the line for farmers and ranchers. The Fish and Wildlife Service is looking to list the monarch butterfly as β€œthreatened” under the Endangered Species Act.

The Service says herbicides are killing milkweed, which is a breeding ground for the butterflies, but they note herbicide damage is minor compared to pesticide exposure. There are several exceptions they are proposing, giving farmers flexibility in areas like grazing, ranching, and mowing. The Wildlife Service is looking for comments on pesticide use and if any exceptions should be made there.

After years of bees dying off by the millions, the most recent U.S. Census of Agriculture indicates that America’s domestic honey bee population is at an all-time high. But those honey bees are just part of the story of pollinator health. Susan Carpenter, native plant garden curator and gardener at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum, told WPR’s β€œCentral Time” that Wisconsin’s native bees have different ecological functions and needs than domesticated honey bees.
