From YRC member Barb Schultz: "Jarmela Speta has always been one of a kind, though in our family there was an Aunt Jarmela who was her namesake. I grew up knowing her as the much older cousin who took me to special places when I made a rare visit to my Chicago relatives from my home on the farm in far northern Wisconsin. Jarmela showed me Colleen Moore’s dollhouse and the captured German sub at The Museum of Science and Industry. Another time, we had lunch at a place in Olde Town that let you throw peanut shells on the floor – for gosh sakes! I was about 9, and all three were equally memorable.

It wasn’t until I joined Sweet Adelines International that I realized how much she impacted other people’s lives as well through her love of singing, teaching, directing, coaching, and arranging barbershop harmony. Last night our director, Jennifer Johnson, pulled out this tag and I finally got a chance to sing one of her arrangements. Nothing like real old time barbershop!"

In loving memory of Jarmela Speta, who passed away this week on August 10th: the tag from "I Feel a Song Coming On." https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18MNFnFXE1/

We had a great time singing at a couple of retirement communities in Dodgeville over Memorial Day weekend! Our members love singing for these small groups, who usually end up singing along. 😍

If you’re a music teacher, then you know these things.

In the heart of every bustling city street, a simple yet powerful message stands tall—reminding us that fixing the teacher shortage isn’t about quick fixes or complex solutions. It’s about respect, fairness, and honest conversation. Teachers carry the weight of shaping future generations, yet too often they face blame, undervaluation, and burnout. Imagine a world where we stop the blame game, nurture respect from the youngest learners, compensate educators fairly, openly discuss their challenges, and honor their boundaries. This vision isn’t a dream; it’s a necessary reset for education to thrive again. What if this billboard could be a catalyst for change, inviting every passerby to rethink their role in supporting teachers? Let’s reflect deeply: How can we, as a community, embody these principles in our daily lives to reclaim the joy and sustainability of teaching?
