The WI K12 Club Waunakee was founded by American Red Cross Badger Chapter Youth Ambassadors Ashley-Anne and Savie Hobbins in the summer of 2010 with support and coordination of the Waunakee Community School District, its Board of Education, the Wisconsin Youth Entrepreneurs Network partnership (and WYEN’s WI DPI partnership) and American Red Cross Badger Chapter. Mary “Minnie” Hobbins founded Badger Chapter in 1909 and also served as Badger Chapter’s Executive Director preceding, during and after WWI, with fourth, fifth and sixth successive generations active today. In spring 2010, American Red Cross Historians in Washington DC wrote an archival work on the family’s ties to American Red Cross titled, “A Family’s Tradition of Giving” (Mary Etta Boesl). The American Red Cross K12 Club Waunakee project founders represent the 6th consecutive Hobbins generation serving American Red Cross. American Red Cross K12 Club Waunakee is K12-designed, Board of Education-approved, district-based American Red Cross club and designed to embrace K12 students while following and adhering to school district policies, procedures and minor children risk and safety guidelines. The club is envisioned to intermesh the unique requirements and constraints of district K12 site-based clubs. It was envisioned to be emulated by and connect the 424 separate school districts within the state via the WI Youth Entrepreneurs Network partnership with WI DPI, facilitate linkage between youth and the American Red Cross. The club is designed as a ‘’framework’’ that can be emulated and link together other school sites within the district and link to new school district-based clubs within the state and American Red Cross Units. K12-based American Red Cross Clubs, students, staff and participants will follow District and Board of Education-approved rules, policies and procedures of the school district in which it was approved. Additionally, K12-based American Red Cross Clubs will fall under the territorial jurisdiction of the home chapter, American Red Cross Western Wisconsin Region. American Red Cross K12 Club Waunakee activities, projects and outreach will adhere to and fall under the jurisdiction of WCSD BOE Policies and Procedures with approval of American Red Cross, local and national headquarter offices. The American Red Cross K12 Club Waunakee’s purpose is to focus on its five pillars and provide youth opportunities to lead, assist and/or provide Red Cross services, activities and outreach both onsite and offsite in the school district and community. It will collaborate with onsite, district and community resources and local Red Cross chapter when needed or required.
