Today we remember those who lost their lives 28 years ago.

On March 23, 1994, at approximately 1400 local time, while Paratroopers were conducting sustained airborne training, an F-16 collided with a C-141 over Green Ramp. The pilots lost control of the F-16 and ejected while the jet collided with the tarmac and rolled through a parked C-141.

55,000 gallons of fuel and live 20 mm rounds from the F16 were ignited, causing fire, shrapnel, and bullets to fly in every direction.

Despite exemplary valor from Paratroopers and medical professionals alike, the “All American” Division lost 24 men and women, ranging from the rank of Private to Captain, ages 19 to 39. Many of these Paratroopers died by using their bodies as shields in order to protect those who sought cover, or those on the ground already injured and could not avoid being struck by flying debris.

The Green Ramp Disaster is considered one of the worst accidents in military history and marks the greatest loss of life in a single day for the 82nd Airborne Division since the Battle of the Bulge.

A message from Major General Michael Cederholm, Commanding General of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing:

Tonight, with an extremely heavy heart, I share the loss of four Marines from America’s Aircraft Wing who were involved in a tragic MV-22B Osprey accident while conducting a training flight in Norway during Exercise COLD RESPONSE 22. The pilots and crewmembers of Ghost 31 were committed to the “Raging Bulls,” our Marine Corps, accomplishing their mission, and a calling to serve something greater than themselves. These Marines were simply doing what they loved to do, and we must – we will – keep these warriors and their selfless example of service in the forefront of our minds.

To the families of our fellow Marines lost in this tragedy, we send our deepest condolences and we keep you foremost in our thoughts and prayers. We will always remain focused on ensuring you remain supported during this incredibly difficult time.

We mourn the loss of our four brothers who dedicated their lives to our Nation, and are deeply saddened by their loss. So, in a manner just like the crew of Ghost 31 would do, we honor them by taking to the skies again with their memory in our hearts, with nerves of steel, and ready to answer our great Nation’s call.

Capt. Matthew J. Tomkiewicz
Capt. Ross A. Reynolds
GySgt. James W. Speedy
