While I don’t live in Waukesha myself, I was very involved with Waukesha Open Poetry while it was still a meeting group and I do play guitar at Open Mics in the area and I do have musician friends in the area who’s shows I go to. I also love looking in the little shops downtown. I was inspired to write about my feelings on the tragedy.
An Outsider Who Cares
It happened late one November day
A normally joyous family event turned into tragedy
Sixty injured and six dead they did say
Watching on the news in Milwaukee , while in my bed I did lay.
All this happened in a city called Waukesha, a city about 20 minutes away.
I posted on my Facebook, “I hope all of my friends in Waukesha are ok!”
Physically Ok, they were, but I was no less heartbroken for the people of the city and those missing loved ones for the holidays you see.
A lump formed in my throat, tears welled in my eyes.
For those hurting and the victims who died.
Unlike families of those with terminal illnesses, murder victims families are deprived of the quality time to say their goodbyes.
For the many at the parade who saw things they would never wanted to see and who as a result may suffer from PTSD.
So where do all these events leave me?
I’m just an outsider who cares you see.
For Waukesha I have empathy.
You see they are my arts community.
It started in a little group called Waukesha Open Poetry.
A group of wonderful people who with open arms welcomed me.
From there I met a lot of local musicians and bands, who at some of Waukesha’s clubs I went to see.
To pick up a guitar again they inspired me.
So I started going to Open Jams
Just an amateur and outsider from Milwaukee you see, yet they accepted and welcomed me.
Making many friends
My loyalty to this city and its people will never end.
Giving to strangers Go Fund Me’s and The United for Waukesha Community Fund.
Despite still feeling very bummed.
Seeing many business start fundraisers
Reaching large sums
People from all walks of life coming together grieving and comforting each other.
A community United as one.
Yesterday, I went to Main St.
To do some shopping and I just had to see for myself, the aftermath of this horrible tragedy.
Flowers, teddy bears, candles and tributes on just about every corner I did see.
In Veterans Park, an even more overwhelming and heartbreaking tribute I did see.
Sad stories from people in the community with closer ties to the tragedy.
Hearing of things I’m glad I didn’t personally see.
While there I bought some items to help those effected in the community.
While there, stores handed out blue lights to light up your porch to honor and remember the victims with a moment of silence on Sunday at 4:39.
Yesterday afternoon I installed mine.
To show I stand with my 2nd community.
If anyone asks….
To them I say…
In times of trouble, I’d do anything for this community!
I’m just an outsider who cares!
