As of May 1st 2026 the federal government put in place new rules and regulations about eligibility requirements for the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) that have effected 250,00+ Illinoisans. As a response Illinois has worked with local organizations to provide some assistance in the form of the Families Receiving Emergency Support for Hunger (FRESH) temporary program to help relieve the strain the change in benefits.

For those who are eligible for the relief, they will be directly contacted about the program by the The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). For more information please visit https://saveoursnap.org/

Food insecurity can happen at any age. More than 12 million seniors and older adults experience food insecurity, according to the Feeding America Map the Meal Gap survey. We understand that food insecurity effects everyone and believe that no one should go hungry. Which is why at UMMA Harvest Market, every Wednesday (10am - 2pm) is senior day, where seniors can come and shop at their own pace.

If are 55 or older or know someone who is and is experiencing food insecurity, please stop into the UMMA Harvest Market and get 25 free items per household per week and know that you are part of the UMMA Community.

“They have evolved into the very needs of what the community wants,” Cunningham said. “When they saw people taking classes needed food, they provided it.
