Last night, Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham and the Waukegan City Council proudly presented a proclamation recognizing April as National Poetry Month in the City of Waukegan to Brotha Blanks and his team from B.A.M.M ( Black Abolition Movement for the Mind), along with Mary Beth Bretzlauf of the Illinois State Poetry Society.
This proclamation celebrates the power of poetry to inspire creativity, amplify diverse voices, and strengthen our community through artistic expression. Waukegan continues to honor its rich artistic legacy by supporting poets and organizations that promote literacy, culture, and the arts.
We thank our local poetry leaders for their continued impact and for helping keep Waukegan’s creative spirit strong.
