Through the WYCYF Junior Sail program, children make new friends, develop new skills and learn a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime. The foundation's fleet of Prams, Optis, and Club 420s let students learn to rig and sail up to three different craft as they advance their skills. The beginning sailors sail in the sheltered waters of Waukegan Harbor, as students progress they sail on Lake Michigan
supported by instructors who keep a close watch from motor powered safety boats. Advanced sailors are offered race coaching and a chance to compete in area regattas with other Junior sail programs. All instructors have CPR and First Aid certifications, as well as Illinois DNR boating safety; lead instructors have achieved U.S. Life jackets are worn at all times on docks and boats. All program boats have flotation and are designed to be righted and sail away. Many fun activities are provided as part of this educational experience. The Waukegan Yacht Club Youth Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Since 1966, its Junior Sail program has provided sailing scholarships, water safety education and equipment for youth in the community. The Waukegan Yacht Club supports the Foundation's community outreach efforts by loaning facilities and storage areas. The Waukegan Yacht Club is a short walk from the Metra station (Union Pacific / North Line).
