13 volunteers. 5 hours. 150 lbs of litter picked up!

Yesterday, 11 Wauconda FBLA volunteers, joined by 2 resident volunteers (Thank you Nayelli and JJ!), picked up litter all throughout Wauconda, Island Lake, and Volo! Combined, we helped remove over 150 lbs of trash from roadways and local ecosystems.

Wondering what we’ve been working on?

To celebrate Earth Day, we are in the midst of carrying out the LARGEST STUDENT-LED ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUPS IN LAKE COUNTY HISTORY!

We took initiative in coordinating and partnering with over 15 schools throughout Lake County to clean our county and build a network of environmentally conscious students and educators.

🚨 Wauconda, we need your help! 🚨

On April 25 (next Saturday), Project: Verdance is hosting a Lake County Trash Cleanup Event. This is a county-wide effort focused on one simple but powerful goal: cleaning up the trash in our communities. Our goal is to host Lake County's largest student-led cleanup in history!

Wauconda High School FBLA Volunteers will be stationed at cleanup sites across Wauconda, Volo, Island Lake, Lakemoor, Barrington, and surrounding areas, working together to remove litter from parks, neighborhoods, and natural spaces. Whether it’s picking up along trails, clearing roadside debris, or restoring shared public areas, every small action adds up to a cleaner, stronger community.

We’re calling on residents, families, and community members of all ages to get involved. This is an easy, meaningful way to spend time together while making a visible impact right where you live. Even an hour of your time can make a difference.

Our second round of environmental mini-lessons was overwhelmingly successful, with 15 Wauconda High School FBLA volunteers giving presentations to over 1,600 students throughout Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown Elementary, and Cotton Creek School. These presentations centered around a variety of environmental topics to increase environmental awareness and advocacy. Verdance Volunteers led elementary students across all grade levels, including students in special education and bilingual classes, in engaging presentations and fun, environmentally friendly crafts. This day was coordinated by Project Verdance Executive Leaders Michael Scheck and Alexus Teran. A massive thank you to Wauconda FBLA advisers, Mr. Geary & Ms. Zimmer for their guidance and their help make this day possible. Another thank you to all the elementary classes who participated and to our volunteers. This day could not have been done without your help and the donation of your time. We hope that students will remember these lessons for years to come and one day, work to make their own positive impact on our community and environment. Wauconda Community Unit School District #118
