📢 New Zealand could soon enforce mandatory passing distances for drivers overtaking cyclists, with fines up to $3,000 for violations.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop has opened public consultation on proposed road rule changes that would require motorists to leave a minimum gap when passing cyclists - 1 metre at speeds up to 59kph (37mph), and 1.5 metres at speeds above that threshold.

The proposal differs from New Zealand's current road code, which recommends 1.5 metres at all speeds. However, critics argue the 1-metre standard is inadequate. The Green Party's transport spokesperson warned: "Anyone who thinks that one metre is suitable has never been on a bike that's been overtaken by a logging truck."

According to New Zealand's Ministry of Transport, cyclist survival rates vary dramatically by impact speed - 55% at 50kph versus 95% at 32kph, highlighting why safe passing distances matter.

The proposals are subject to public consultation until late March 2026, with the government indicating openness to modifications based on feedback.

Thoughts? Should 1.5m be the absolute minimum?

“We’re not arguing women inherently build better cities. We’re arguing more diverse decision-making tables lead to better outcomes.”

Today, leadership and planning roles are still disproportionately occupied by men, shaping our cities through both implicit and explicit biases. Achieving gender parity isn’t simply a matter of fairness; it fundamentally improves the process and places we create.

More representative voices bring different lived experiences, challenge entrenched assumptions, and help break through the status quo.

This week, we were honoured to appear on Monocle Radio’s The Urbanist—one of the world’s most influential podcasts on city-making—who interviewed us from the streets of Bratislava alongside the Start with Children Summit’s Petra Marko.

A special thank you to Alexei Korolyov for the thoughtful conversation and continuing to spotlight the ideas, policies, and people transforming cities for the better.
