Our Story
NETworX is a national program that seeks to bring people of all socio-economic backgrounds together to help people out of poverty. About a year and a half ago, Robin Mathews-Johnson (pastor of Watsonville First United Methodist Church) with the help of the United Methodist Church in Carson City, Nev. and with local Community Action Board Executive Director Maria Elena De La Garza were able to translate the program into Spanish so that we could implement it in our community. Robin, along with Co-Coordinators Mayra Bernabe and Maritza Ortiz then launched Watsonville NETworX on February 3rd, 2017.
Watsonville NETworX offers an opportunity for individuals known as Champions to develop a personal life plan by attending a 12-15-week training program. Here, our participants investigate behaviors preventing them from leading a financially secure life, in a highly participatory curriculum which is bilingual.
Participants assess their own strengths and resources (financial, educational, spiritual, emotional, relational, physical, social, etc.) and identify areas they want to improve. They receive tools such as self-discovery, the hidden rules, and budgeting amongst other to prepare them to set life goals AND are invited to be part of a support network.
Watsonville NETworX is a family program! In addition to our adult curriculum, we also have childcare and a youth group kids’ curriculum. We value building community, which is why we have Family Fun Nights, where we take our families on fieldtrips on a quarterly basis.
