LETS DO OUR PART!!

IDNR is asking hunters, landowners, outdoor enthusiasts, conservation professionals, and other members of the public to help monitor wild turkey reproduction by reporting wild turkey sightings this summer through the Illinois Wild Turkey Survey.

Participants can report wild turkey sightings, including the number of adult females, young turkeys or poults, adult males, and birds of unknown age or s*x. These reports help IDNR track annual reproduction, poult survival, and broad population trends across the state.

Summer observations are one of the few statewide sources of information on wild turkey reproduction outside of the spring hunting season. Even a single reported observation helps IDNR evaluate wild turkey productivity and is considered alongside spring harvest, hunter success, permit data, weather, habitat conditions, and other information when assessing Illinois wild turkey status and management needs.

The survey is open through August. July and August are especially important months for standardized data collection because those observations are used in annual reproductive trend analyses

NWTF LOCALLY AND STATE WIDE has been the largest organization to help build habitat to protect and grow the turkey population more than any other organization and it’s definitely proven itself.
Illinois hunters harvested a preliminary record total of 20,821 wild turkeys during the 2026 spring turkey season, surpassing the previous record of 18,189 birds harvested in 2025.

The top counties for turkey harvest during the 2026 season were Jefferson and Jo Daviess counties, tied with 646 birds harvested; followed by Marion, 530; Pike, 525; and Wayne, 464.

This year, hunters purchased 94,704 permits compared to 89,580 last year. This year’s total included a record youth spring turkey season harvest of 2,326 birds compared to 2,099 birds in 2025.

A total of 70,158 individual hunters purchased permits for the 2026 spring turkey season. Preliminary figures indicate approximately 22% of permits sold were filled this year, compared to 20.3% last year.
