Have you ever wondered how Lydia’s Place got its name?
It’s been a while since we’ve shared this story, and for those who are new here, we’d love to introduce you to someone very special.
Meet Lydia Hight, the grandmother of our founder, April Farlow, and the woman who helped inspire the heart behind Lydia’s Place. Born in 1891, Lydia knew what it meant to work hard and live with very little. She raised her family as a single mother, worked long hours, and did whatever she could to make ends meet. But what made Lydia so special wasn’t what she had. It was what she was willing to share.
Over time, she saved enough money to purchase land and eventually had three homes on her property. Rather than keeping that space for herself, she welcomed individuals and families who needed somewhere to stay while they worked toward getting back on their feet.
Years later, that same compassion would help inspire our Founder, April Farlow to establish Lydia’s Place.
Our name also honors Lydia from the Bible, a woman remembered for her faith and hospitality. Both women shared something that remains important to us today: a willingness to open their doors and make room for others.
Today, Lydia’s Place carries that legacy forward by providing housing, resources, encouragement, and a sense of belonging for young adults who have experienced foster care or housing insecurity. We often talk about the importance of giving our students a place to call home. For April, that belief started with the example her grandmother set many years ago.
And we think that’s a pretty special story worth sharing. 💜
