World Environment Day🌎

Happy World Environment Day! 🌎️ In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly established this observance to raise environmental awareness across the globe. The holiday has been held annually on June 5, a date that commemorates the start of the landmark 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, in Stockholm, Sweden.

Each year, World Environment Day focuses on a particularly pressing environmental issue, such as wildlife conservation, climate change, or our vital connection to nature 🦬🌳

Plastic bags and plastic film, like that from cases of water bottles, are tanglers and interfere with the sorting of recycling materials. Please remember that they are recyclable just not in the regular recycling bin. Take them to area grocery or big box/home improvement stores who host recycle boxes specifically for them. They can also go to the ACC CHaRM in Athens. Recycling right is critical.♻️

Need help finding a place to drop-off plastic film or bags? Try the Plastic Film Recycling’s map locator to find the nearest drop-off sites that accept plastic bags and film. The site has more information on the types of plastic film items that are recyclable.
Here in Oconee County there are several grocery, big box and home improvement stores that have plastic film/bag collection bins, sometimes out front, just inside the door or located in their customer service area. If you don’t see it, just ask♻️

⚠️Our recycling centers are not equipped to dispose of pressurized tanks, including extinguishers, helium and propane tanks of any size. If you need to dispose of an old tank, here are a few options:

♻️ Empty propane tanks can often be exchanged for filled tanks at local retailers such as Publix or Ace Hardware.
♻️ Tanks can be recycled at CHaRM in Athens.

Thanks for recycling right and helping to keep Oconee County clean, green, and beautiful!
