Did you know, 3 in 4 adults see people they care about in person only twice a month or less?

As we reach the end of National Mental Health Awareness Month, make sure to maintain the connections you've made throughout the month by making a plan to get together.
However you gather, it matters. Plan to connect.
Who will you call this week?

If you, or someone you know is struggling with their mental and emotional health, reach out to a trained counselor by texting or calling 988. https://988lifeline.org/

For adults 60 and older, you can also contact the Schuyler County Office for the Aging by calling 607-535-7108 to be connected to social supports.

Using AI for certain things can be okay, but if we lean too much on AI companions for our social and emotional needs, we may find ourselves isolated and withdrawn from the real world.

Who else can you talk to if you're struggling?
1) You can talk to a trained counselor, either in person or remotely.
2) You can also reach out to your friends for support. They are likely facing similar challenges.
3) You could talk to your parent or guardian. If you don't feel safe or comfortable talking to them, think of another adult you trust and feel safe with, then reach out to them.
4) A coach or a teacher could be another great support for the different challenges you experience.

Regardless of who you choose to reach out to, just know that real life connections can help you.

In the world of quickly evolving AI, there are actions you can take to make sure your kids stay safe.

1) Be open and curious when you ask your child how they're using AI. This will help them feel safe talking to you about it.

2)Have your child show you the platforms they're using and explain how they're using them.

3) Encourage and nurture real life relationships with your child. Teach them that it's okay to occasionally use AI and hang out in some online spaces, but genuine love and support come from relationships with real people.

Talking to AI as if it's a friend? Here are some things you can do instead:

1) Talk to a friend or trusted adult. Let them know that you'd like to focus more on in-person connections.

2) Make plans to hang out with your friends in person.

3) Join a sport or a club. Not only can these activities help you connect with the people in your life, but they can also be a good distraction from your devices.

4) Spend time with your pets. Spending time with a pet can also be a great source of comfort and companionship.

Most importantly, if you really feel like you're struggling, you can also anonymously connect with a trained professional at 988. They're available 24/7 by phone, text, or chat. Visit the website for more information and youth resources. https://988lifeline.org/help-yourself/youth/

Are your kids using some form of AI? AI may be a useful tool for some things, but there could also be risks involved.

If you're concerned your kids are using AI too much for companionship or mental health support, there are some things you can do to help them get the support they need.

1) Nurture your relationship with them. Set aside device-free time each week as a family.
2) Encourage in-person socialization. Have your child plan activities with their friends in real life.
3) Talk with their doctor about getting a referral to a mental health professional if they seem to be struggling.

If your child seems to be in crisis, you can always contact the 988 Lifeline by phone, text, or chat. https://988lifeline.org/
