Meet June. This 18y QH mare is an emergency intake tonight. She was picked up a few counties over on one of the most beautiful, picturesque farms I’ve ever laid eyes on. After her Owner’s passing, family members have been trying to take care of her on this beautiful homestead. In the process, the farm has been leased for cattle, and in the preparation for that, and changes to the pasture management. We believe she was foundered and is now abscessing with possible infection into her leg. Friends with the family reached out to our assistant director and asked for assistance. After hearing her history and condition, we decided to intervene. This mayor was once a camp horse, and then retired to this Farm and has not left there in over a decade. We gave her pain management on arrival at coaxed her onto the trailer. Despite being in pain, she took the trip and arrival with grace. She is settling into our main barn aisle with deep shavings and an alfalfa mash and we will work to get the Vet out tomorrow to assess her condition fully and determine what the next course of action is…
Horses like June exist everywhere right now. We literally have a waiting list of horses wanting to come in that we are keeping at bay due to finances, but we always keep a slot or two open for emergent cases like this.
