With the New Year, invest in your family and friends. Consider prioritizing the well-being of your loved ones and preparing for unexpected challenges. Being proactive in disaster preparedness is an important way to safeguard your family and friends. Here are a few steps you could take to help ensure safety and well-being for all
1. Emergency Kit: Create or update an emergency kit that includes essential supplies like water, non-perishable food, first aid items, flashlight, batteries, a portable charger, and important documents. Tailor it to your location and specific needs (e.g., prescription meds or baby supplies).
2. Communication Plan: Establish a family communication plan, especially if you're in different locations during an emergency. Make sure everyone knows how to reach each other, and designate an out-of-town contact as a central point for checking in.
3. Home Safety Checks: Ensure your home is secure. This could involve checking fire alarms, securing heavy furniture that could topple in an earthquake, and identifying safe spots in your home.
4. Skills & Education: Learn basic first aid, CPR, and emergency preparedness. Teach your family essential skills like how to shut off utilities and how to use fire extinguishers.
5. Stay Informed: Stay up-to-date with news about potential natural or man-made threats in your area. This could mean subscribing to emergency alert systems or using apps that provide real-time disaster updates.
6. Community Preparedness: In addition to preparing yourself, consider helping others—neighbors, friends, or community organizations—in disaster planning efforts. Strengthening the community network can be just as crucial when a crisis hits.
7. Financial Readiness: Consider your financial safety net—emergency savings, insurance coverage, and any important financial paperwork that may be needed for disaster recovery.
Starting the year with these preparations not only offers peace of mind but strengthens your bonds with those you care about. Here's to a safe, prepared, and prosperous year ahead!

Stroh named as county’s Community Emergency Response Team manager
By Ashleigh Plemper
Farmer Staff Writer

McKenzie County CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) recently announced Carl Stroh as its new program manager.
Stroh will benefit the team by bringing a wide array of experience in emergency services, which include fire fighting, dealing with natural disasters as well as a military background.
Stroh grew up on a ranch in northeast Wyoming with a passion for Emergency Services. After high school, he joined volunteer fire departments in whatever community he was in and participated in many wildland fire incidents as well as search and rescue operations.

CERT

What does Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) do? By helping communities during disasters and emergencies. Local Government prepares for every day emergencies, however, during a disaster, the number and scope of incidents can overwhelm conventional emergency services. CERT training is designed to prepare you to help yourself, your family, your neighbors and your community in the event of a catastrophic disaster. First Responders will not be able to help everyone immediately, but you can make a difference by using the training in the CERT course to save lives and protect property. This training covers basic skills that are important to know in a disaster, when emergency services are not available. With training and practice and by working as a team, you will be able to do the greatest good for the greatest number of victims after a disaster, while protecting yourself from becoming a victim. For more information to become involved, you can e-mail McKenzie County Emergency Management at [email protected] Our next meeting is scheduled for August 21, 2019.
