General Mark W. Clark (1896–1984) — WWII Army Officer.

He is the most famous figure by this name, known as a high-ranking United States Army officer who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.

World War II Prominence: He was the youngest four-star general in the U.S. Army during WWII. He commanded the U.S. Fifth Army and later the 15th Army Group during the Italian campaign, famously leading the Allied forces that captured Rome in June 1944.

Korean War: He later commanded the United Nations Command in the Korean War, signing the Korean Armistice Agreement in 1953.
Later Life: After retiring from the military, he served as the president of The Citadel (The Military College of South Carolina) from 1954 to 1965.

As the Army Chief of Staff during WWII, Marshall oversaw the largest military expansion in U.S. history, growing a depleted force of under 200,000 soldiers into a massive, modern fighting force of over 8 million.

He possessed a legendary eye for talent, promoting junior officers like Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, and George S. Patton into major command roles.

He worked directly with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Honoring the Fallen: A Memorial Day Message from Maine Masonic College

At Maine Masonic College, we pause to express our deepest gratitude to the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. No soldier seeks to pay that price, yet when freedom is challenged, they selflessly lay down their lives so that our families and our country can live in peace and liberty.

While Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season—a time for families to gather and connect—it is, above all, a day of sacred remembrance. As you enjoy this long weekend with loved ones, we invite you to join us in honoring those who gave everything for our freedom, and in raising a glass of appreciation to all who serve in our Armed Forces.

Omar Bradley

Bradley was chosen to command the First United States Army during the Normandy landings (Operation Overlord). He oversaw the American assaults at Omaha and Utah beaches.

12th Army Group: Following the breakout from Normandy, he took command of the 12th Army Group. By the end of the war, this group grew to encompass four field armies and over 1.3 million combat troops—the largest body of American soldiers ever serving under a single field commander.

First Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: In 1949, President Harry S. Truman appointed Bradley as the very first official Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He navigated the complex military strategy of the Korean War and the early years of the Cold War.

General Douglas MacArthur (1880–1964)
General of the Army Douglas MacArthur was one of the most polarizing and influential military figures in American history. A five-star general, he played a massive role in the Pacific Theater during World War II, oversaw the post-war occupation of Japan, and led United Nations forces in the Korean War until his dramatic dismissal by President Harry S. Truman.

Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867–1951) is arguably the most significant figure in Finnish history. A complex and multifaceted leader, he transitioned from a high-ranking officer in the Imperial Russian Army to the "Father of Modern Finland."
Key Historical Roles

Mannerheim's life spanned several eras, and he held the highest possible offices in the Finnish state:

Regent of Finland (1918–1919): Helped stabilize the country following the Finnish Civil War.

Commander-in-Chief: Led the Finnish Defense Forces during the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944) against the Soviet Union.

Today we pause to honor the women whose love, strength, and steady guidance helped shape not only the men we’ve become, but the Masons we strive to be. Their influence lives in our values, our service, and the character we continue to build every day.

Long before we heard the words Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth, we learned their spirit at home. A mother’s compassion teaches brotherly love. Her sacrifices teach relief. Her honesty and courage teach truth. The virtues we refine in the lodge were often planted by the women who raised us.

We also recognize the women who support our Masonic journey today—those who encourage our service, listen to our stories, and graciously tolerate the late lodge nights. Their support makes our good work possible.

Mother’s Day reminds us that family isn’t only blood. Many of us were shaped by grandmothers, guardians, mentors, teachers, and women in our communities who stepped in with guidance and love. Freemasonry honors all who help build character and strengthen the human family.

As Masons, we are builders—of lives, communities, and moral character. Today we honor the women who were the first builders in ours. Their influence is woven into every good work we do.
Happy Mother’s Day to all who nurture, guide, and inspire.

We are exactly 60 days away from July 4th. We at the college have enjoyed this journey of highlighting those who made an influence during the period of America's 250 years, both in the country and beyond.

As we get closer to July 4th, here are some names I am sure you recognize and events that sound familiar to you.

Thomas Jefferson
Though he lived long after the war, Jefferson is the ultimate "July 4th" figure. He was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, effectively starting the political revolution.
The Write-up: Jefferson was the "silent member" of the Continental Congress who used his pen as a weapon. He drafted the Declaration of Independence in June 1776. In an almost unbelievable twist of fate, he died on July 4, 1826—the 50th anniversary of the Declaration—just hours before his friend and rival, John Adams.
