Chris Urbine, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education and Director of Undergraduate Teacher Preparation at Regis College Department of Education, returned to lead a 2nd session in math curriculum. Professional development such as this is one of the perks of our ongoing partnership with Regis, ensuring that our faculty add to their expertise with the latest methods and thinking in education. Ultimately, SSAES students benefit from this as teachers bring their learning into daily classroom practice.

May was a busy month in 2nd grade at SSAES; 5 new members joined the class - Painted Lady caterpillars! Over the course of the month, 2nd-graders made written and drawn observations of the caterpillars as they turned into chrysalises and finally butterflies. Then using their knowledge each student authored and illustrated an “All About Butterflies” book. After a few days as butterflies, it was time to release them into their natural habitat. Kindergarten joined in the release.

And just like that, the SSAES 5th-grade returns to school from their Armenia Trip.

SSAES ARMENIA TRIP JOURNAL - Day 14 Reporter: Lyanna Thompson - Today we started off our day by making sure we had packed everything to head back to Boston. Then half awake everyone met downstairs with all the luggage. The hotel supplied us with some food to bring to the airport with us since it was 5:45 am. Once everyone came downstairs we headed to the bus for the last time. On our way to the airport we saw Mt. Ararat. It was beautiful. When we arrived at the airport we said bye to our tour guide and headed inside to check our luggage and go through security. It took a long time. The flight to Paris wasn’t bad. After landing everyone went their own ways and got food, drinks, or stuff to keep them occupied. It was a five hour layover. It felt like a long time but it went by fast. All the parents and kids laughed and talked to each other to pass time. We boarded the plane and waited for 15 minutes to get up in the sky; some people changed seats to be by their friends. They also gave us some dinner which was okay. Some people fell asleep on the plane ride. When we arrived in Boston everyone was so happy to be back with their families, but it was sad to say bye to our homeland. Some of our favorite things were the churches, especially Datev because we got to go on a cable car to the Church and the view was gorgeous. Other things we will miss are staying up late at a friend’s hotel room, going to the pool and last but not least the amazing Armenian food like kebab, BBQ, salads, french fries and spaghetti. Most nights we would go to this cafe where they had milkshakes for the kids and the parents would just laugh and have fun together. But mostly we got to learn more about our culture. It was a great trip that we will always remember.

SSAES ARMENIA TRIP JOURNAL - Day 13 Reporter: Haig Mardiros - We went to Geghard Monastery Գեղարդի տաճար which is partially built from bricks and partially carved from the rock face. We saw beautiful khachkars and listened to a vocal group sing in the upper chamber. The four ladies had angelic voices which echoed against the walls of the cave. A truly incredible experience to say the least. It was my pleasure to reconnect with this ancient site since we visited here in 2023 when I came with my family.
There was a river nearby so we took the opportunity to take pictures together.
Then we went to the Symphony of Stones where we saw magnificent natural basalt formations. This seemingly impossible place drew many tourists from a lot of different places because it is so unique.
Then we went to Garni which is the only pagan temple left in Armenia. My dad and Sam's dad had taken a picture there 20 years ago so Sam and I recreated the picture. I'm sure it will be a happy memory in the future.
We stopped by a nearby restaurant for an outdoor lunch and had a delicious kebab and chicken lunch. There was even a big tank where they raised sturgeon and trout so they could offer fresh fish. Such a fun place.
We stopped at Grand Candy on the way back to the hotel and our favorite teacher Dg. Artemis bought bonchig for us which is Armenian fried dough.
It was our last day here and I'm really going to miss being here with my friends.

SSAES ARMENIA TRIP JOURNAL - Day 12 Reporter: Serop Khatchadourian - Today after breakfast we watched the Armenian Independence Day parade in the hrabarag Hanrapetutyan Hraparak Republic Square. We had to walk a few blocks to get to the bus, and on the walk a man on a wheelchair fell sideways and we helped him up and gave him an ice pack for his arm. When we got to the bus, we drove to Sardarabad. When we arrived, there were so many people! We walked around and even climbed up onto the massive structure made of an orange volcanic rock called տուֆ. While we stood on the structure we sang Մեր Հայրենիք and Սարդարապատ. It was also really hot: 80 degrees Fahrenheit! It was a really enjoyable time. After leaving Sardarabad we drove to lunch at Նոր Դուին. We had spaghetti, kebab, French fries, and salad. It was absolutely perfect. Afterwards we drove to Yeraplour (Եռաբլուր), a cemetery for the soldiers wh - died in the Artsakh War. We walked around and placed Armenian and Artsakh flags on the graves of the soldiers. Although we visited the cemeteries, we hope that Artsakh will be ours again. After that we swam in the hotel pool for a little while before going to dinner at Yerevan Tavern, where we were graciously hosted by our former classmate Arega and her family, Alik and Serine Sargsyan.
