How can I forget my past failings? We have all heard friends ask this question at some point, and on occasions we have been the ones to utter those words. If only we could forget, we might have more energy to follow Jesus, but one of the evil one’s strongest tactics is to remind us of past shortcomings and failures, and to drag us down. Tragically, some of God’s own people act as agents for the evil one by doing the reminding!

The psalmist tried to use a metaphor to explain how God remembers to forget our sin: ‘...as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us’ (Psalm 103:12). This reminds us that God’s view of our sin is very different from our own.

Holding on to the guilt of past sin will only sap our energy in serving the Lord. The past is gone and cannot be reclaimed. No matter whether we have done well or badly, we cannot return to the moment and relive it differently.

Paul’s example is to forget the past and expend all energy towards what is ahead. Let us place our focus on the things we have control over and not allow ourselves to be debilitated by the past.

Let us strive hard for the promises of Jesus. Let us use every ounce of energy at our disposal to follow him ever more closely. Let us keep the ultimate goal – knowing Jesus better and following and serving him more closely – as our primary aim for life.

It’s like a race. We direct all our available resources of energy and power towards being the best that we can be. Half-hearted training is of little benefit. The winners are the people with a sharp focus and dedication. Let us be like that in our faith and discipleship.

➡ 'Remembering to forget' is today's daily reflection of Words of Life. Our past mistakes and failures can weigh heavily on us, but Paul reminds us to leave what is behind and press on towards what lies ahead. In Christ, we can find freedom from the guilt of the past and renewed strength to follow him.

'What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord...' 📖 Philippians 3:8

Having stated his position on the debate about tradition or otherwise, Paul now commenced his explanation. Rather like a barrister in a courtroom, he sets his rationale carefully and in good order. Essentially, he says, ‘I could be “Exhibit A” of the traditional, and if I took that stance it would be hard to argue against me. But I have found in Jesus something that makes everything else in my entire life seem utterly worthless.’

This is a mighty introduction! Despite calling himself a ‘Hebrew of Hebrews’ (v 5), his experience on the road to Damascus had so changed him that he compared all the trappings of the Jewish religion to be like resounding gongs and crashing cymbals (1 Corinthians 13:1).

For Paul, it was all about Jesus. To him it no longer mattered whether a person was Jewish or Gentile by birth. If they came to know Jesus, then that was the only important thing. However they had grown up the past was gone, and, by knowing Jesus, the new had come (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Following tradition, however good it might have been for others, is not going to help a person into the Kingdom of God, and Paul wanted this to be clear to his readers and hearers. In the words of a phrase we may have seen on car bumper stickers or advertising hoardings: ‘Know Jesus, know life. No Jesus, no life.’

What changed for you when you met Jesus? Of course, some of us had a similar experience to Paul – a radical change – but for others, faith in Jesus has been, and continues to be, a longer journey. But what has changed for you? What would you never go back to and what things do you struggle to release?

🙏 Lord, knowing you is the greatest thing. Help me to release anything that limits my love and service for you. Amen.

➡ 'Spent and worthless' is today's daily reflection of Words of Life. For Paul, nothing compared with knowing Jesus. His story challenges us to consider what we value most and what we might need to let go of in order to grow closer to Christ.
