As a nonprofit biotech, our cutting-edge research is fueled by the ALS community. Visit www.als.net to explore our impact and help fund cures. Since 1999, our team has grown from a family working in a basement to a team of over 30 full-time researchers. We are dedicated to discovering and inventing effective treatments to end ALS. We will not stop until there is a treatment for every person living with ALS.

For years, researchers have observed increased rates of ALS among certain populations, including elite athletes, military veterans, and first responders. What remains unclear is why.

Champion Insights was created to help answer that question. By studying individuals from populations at elevated risk, researchers are exploring how genetics, environment, lifestyle, and other factors may interact to influence ALS risk and progression.

As Steve Gleason shares in our recent Town Hall, understanding these connections is essential to moving beyond correlations and toward answers.

Yesterday, Stuart Chapin dipped the rear tire of his bike into the Atlantic Ocean and officially began a 5,000+ mile journey across the country in honor of his father, Scott, who passed away from ALS.

Over the next 76 days, Stuart will ride from New York to San Francisco while fundraising for ALS research at ALS TDI through his effort, Going the Distance for ALS

What makes this ride especially powerful is not just the distance, but the purpose behind it. Like so many families affected by ALS, Stuart witnessed firsthand how devastating this disease is. Now, he’s turning his experience into action.

Along the way, he’ll share stories from the ALS community, connect with supporters across the country, and raise critical funds to help advance research toward treatments and cures.

This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the brave service members who gave their lives in service to our country.

At ALS TDI, we also recognize the importance of advancing research for veterans and others who may face a higher risk of developing ALS. Through Champion Insights, ALS TDI, , and are working together to better understand why certain groups, including veterans, athletes, and first responders, may be more vulnerable to the disease.

Today, we honor those we’ve lost and remain committed to moving ALS research forward for the communities impacted by this disease.

If you’re in Louisiana this weekend, don’t miss the chance to visit Rusty Costanza’s powerful photography exhibit, Love in the Face of ALS: A Photographic Journey, on display at the St. Tammany Art Association Gallery through May 27.

After being diagnosed with ALS, Rusty adapted his photography to document the realities of living with the disease — from hospital visits and caregiving moments to the love and community that surround him each day. His work offers an intimate and deeply human look at life with ALS.

Thank you, Rusty, for sharing your story and perspective with the ALS community.

You can read more of Rusty’s story and preview additional photos from the exhibit here: https://www.als.net/news/rusty-costanza-love-in-the-face-of-als/
