Historical Society of Watertown, Watertown MA Built in 1772, the Edmund Fowle House is the second oldest surviving house in Watertown. At the beginning of the American Revolution.

it served as headquarters for the executive branch of the Massachusetts government from June 1775 to September 1776. Due to the Pandemic, the House museum tours are temporarily on hold. Please call the Society for an update, if interested in a tour. Normally they are held on the 3rd Sunday of the month from 1pm - 4 pm. The last tour of the day is at 3:15pm. Tours are also available by appointment.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
