🌳💚 WATERTOWN ROTARY CLUB LEADS SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING EFFORT 💚🌳
Members of the Watertown Rotary Club and dozens of community volunteers came together on Saturday for another highly successful annual tree planting event in Watertown, with more than 70 people signing in to participate.
By the end of the day, a total of 53 trees had been planted along Eastern Boulevard and Ohio Street. Organizers selected a wide variety of tree species to ensure strong diversity and to match the most appropriate tree to each planting site.
Rotarians taking part in the project included Howie Ganter, Bill Hartman, Jim McCluskey, Paul Trimper, Phil Sprague, Kevin Jordan, and Brian Ashley, along with other club members. They were joined by student volunteers from Immaculate Heart Central School and Watertown High School, six representatives from the Northern New York Community Foundation Youth Philanthropy Council, and members of several local church groups.
The youngest volunteer of the day was James Wright, age 2½, while organizers noted there was spirited competition among participants for the title of most senior planter.
Volunteers enjoyed donuts, hot chocolate, and plenty of camaraderie while accomplishing an impressive amount of work. The planting effort focused on a section of Eastern Boulevard that is part of Rotary’s Adopt-a-Highway program, and also included planting near the sign welcoming visitors to Watertown and recognizing the city as a Tree City USA community.
Funding for the project was provided through a $3,000 grant from an endowed fund at the Northern New York Community Foundation that was established by Rotary for the sole purpose of supporting the club’s annual tree planting initiative.
🌎 This annual event reflects Rotary’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, community pride, and Service Above Self.
