Americans for Independent Living Veteran Resource Center Americans for Independent Living Veteran Resource Center (AFIL) is a 501c3 organization. AFIL honors those who've served.

Supporting veterans and their families with safe housing and a resource center where veterans can access essential resources. Tim Combs, Founder and Executive Director, has been interested in the building trades since he was 10 years-old. At 28 he went back to school and received an AAS in Civil and Construction Engineering and 5 years later started his own business. He has met the qualifications and passed the examination to be qualified as a Certified Environmental Access Consultant. Environmental Access is the process of adapting a residence and/or general environment to promote the independence and functional ability of the physically challenged. Adaptations may include physically changing portions of an environment to create functional access according to an individual's specific needs. Because of a yearning to do more for others, he founded Americans for Independent Living in 2015. He felt veterans deserved more support than what has been available to them. He will advocate in the community to make others aware of how important it is to recognize, celebrate and support our veterans. Americans for Independent Livings impact in the community will be from public awareness of the need for more accessible living areas for disabled veterans and a transitional housing for Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Our online store is now open! Order your Music with a Mission T-shirt early and show your support for local veterans.
Orders will be available for pickup at the AFIL office once they’re ready. The store closes November 1, so be sure to order before then! Shirts will also be available for purchase at the event.
We’re also working on a general AFIL T-shirt—coming soon!

A local veteran and his family need our support. His son is in critical care in Iowa City after falling from a second-story balcony. Having recently started a new job, this veteran is not yet eligible for FMLA and is traveling back and forth to be with his son.

Gas gift cards would help ease the burden during this difficult time. If you would like to donate, please drop them off at AFIL, 4020 University Ave., Waterloo.
