Meet Cannon Van D**e, a Waterloo Career Center student who is turning the WCC Agriculture Department into a thriving, green workspace.

Working as a Plant Science intern under the mentorship of Hunter Hamilton, Cannon handles the complex, daily operations that keep the department growing. From managing the composting program using cafeteria scraps to monitoring pH levels in the hydroponics systems, Cannon is immersed in the science of plant life. He has even taken a leadership role in planning the upcoming FFA plant sale, applying his skills in germination and plant care to ensure a successful event.

Through his placement, Cannon has mastered the art of "trusting the process." Working with plants has taught him that growth takes time and that feedback isn't always immediate—lessons that have built his patience and observational skills.

"Agriculture is a great opportunity to explore what the field you are interested in is actually like," Cannon says. "I’ve learned how to adapt, realizing that every plant is different and needs its own balance of water, sunlight, and heat. It’s also helped me improve how I communicate my observations and log data."

Cannon has worked hard to refine his technical writing through data logging and has become an expert at verbalizing the subtle changes he sees in the greenhouse. After graduation, he plans to attend Hawkeye Community College for their Ag Business program, with an eye toward working for a farmer's co-op or continuing his studies at Iowa State University. His ultimate dream? To combine his love for the land with heavy machinery as a heavy farm equipment operator.
