Hey, Karen that is our proud history that gave us these wonderful Finger Lakes.

New York looked very different 20,000 years ago. 🧊

During the Last Glacial Maximum, the Laurentide Ice Sheet covered almost all of New York, reshaping the landscape as glaciers advanced and retreated.

The Finger Lakes, Adirondack terrain, Hudson Valley, and Long Island’s glacial moraines all preserve evidence of that icy past.

The Finger Lakes were strongly shaped by glaciers carving and modifying existing valleys, while Long Island’s moraines mark former positions of the ice sheet.

The next time you look across New York’s landscape, remember: much of what you see today was shaped by glaciers.

âť“ Did you know? Glaciers also left visible grooves and other marks on exposed bedrock in Central Park.
