Happy !

Today we honor the legacy of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas who were finally informed of their freedom, some two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was those people, and the generations of Texans who came after them, who made the bold declaration to celebrate this day, marking a reality we know far too well in this country: freedom may be delayed, but it will never be denied.

Though our fight for freedom sadly continues, today we pause to celebrate and embrace the joy of our ancestors who believed in the possibilities of a more promising tomorrow. And in that joy, we remain anchored, steadfast in our pursuit of true freedom and justice for all.

Today we are featuring Board Member Krystal Madlock, who has been serving our district for 3 years with a focus on connection and clarity!

Krystal has always been a communicator at heart. Her favorite subject was English because it helped her understand people—a skill she uses every single day in her work at Wartburg College to build community and connect with students. If she were in a school talent show, you might catch her on the mic, though she jokes she would likely be "singing... I mean lip-syncing!)" 🎤✨

Krystal holds a special place in her heart for her early education, noting that the teachers and staff at Grant Elementary were vital in shaping her identity and providing her with positive, lasting memories. Looking at our district today, she is inspired by the hands-on opportunities available to our students and would love to sit in on any class at the Career Center!

Krystal brings a powerful "school board superpower" to the table: the ability to turn complex ideas into practical steps. Reflecting on her approach, she shares:
