Waterford, in Erie County, in the northwest corner of the state, played a significant part in the history of our country. It was here, to Fort LeBoeuf that young George Washington came in 1753, to tell the French that this was British territory and that they must leave. When they didn’t, this was the spark that kindled the French and Indian War. After the French were forced to leave, the British b

uilt a fort, which was subsequently burned by the Indians during Pontiac’s Rebellion, and after the Revolutionary War, an American fort was built to protect incoming settlers from possible Indian attacks. The forts are gone now, but vestiges of our rich historical past remain.

📜 FROM THE ARCHIVE DESK 📜
Waterford Station, commonly called the “Train Depot” (pictures from the early 1900s)

Built in the mid 1850s to provide service for the Philadephia & Erie Line, the depot contained a telegraph office. At that time, there two different opinions about where the train tracks should be laid through Waterford. William Judson and his followers would benefit from the railroad coming directly through town. But, the other faction, led by Robert Brotherton, did not want train tracks coming through their small town. Brotherton benefitted greatly from this final decision to place the railroad, two miles east of downtown, as he owned the property in that area. It was said that Brotherton and Judson never spoke to each other again. As a consequence, a small town grew up around the depot with shops, a cider mill and a hotel-grocery store. The area was known for some time, as East Waterford.

Ohio Country, 1754 Drawn by George Washington
This map was drawn by a 22 year old George Washington after his mission to Fort LeBoeuf, detailing the area of Western Pennsylvania

“The French are now coming from their
Forts on Lake Erie for the Creek to Venango
to build another Fort — and from thence
they design to the Forks of Monongahela
and Ohio. Troops and all to continue
down the River building at the most con-
venient places in order to prevent our
Settlements”

“A little below Shanopin’s Town and
the Forks is the place where we are going
now to Build a Fort and command
the Ohio and Monongahela.”
