Waterbury PAL Celebrates Three Youth Selected for Prestigious Taft Summer Program

WATERBURY, CT – The Waterbury Police Activity League (PAL) proudly celebrated three outstanding local youth on June 17, 2026, during a special Media Day recognizing their selection to attend the prestigious Summer at Taft Program.

The students, selected through a competitive process, were awarded scholarships to participate in the five-week residential summer program at the Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut. The experience provides students with the opportunity to live on campus, engage in academic enrichment, develop leadership skills, and build lasting relationships with peers from diverse backgrounds.

To recognize this achievement, Waterbury PAL welcomed the students, their families, school administrators, and representatives from the Taft School for an afternoon of celebration and recognition.

“We are incredibly proud of these young people and the hard work that led to this opportunity,” said Erica Soares, Program Director of Waterbury PAL. “Being selected for the Summer at Taft Program is a tremendous accomplishment. This experience will allow our youth to challenge themselves academically, build confidence, and gain valuable life experiences that will help shape their future.”

Representing the Taft School was Ryan Gemmell, Co-Director of Summer @ Taft, who joined families and community members in celebrating the students’ achievements and their upcoming summer experience.

The Summer at Taft Program provides students with a unique opportunity to experience life on a boarding school campus while participating in academic courses, recreational activities, leadership development.

The partnership between Waterbury PAL and the Taft School continues to create meaningful opportunities for local youth by expanding access to high-quality educational and personal development experiences.

Waterbury PAL & The Taft School congratulates the following students on their selection and wishes them a successful and memorable summer at Taft:

• Skylar Talbert – Carrington School
• Sheyla Martos-Carchi– Aces at Chase
• Karola DeFreitas – North End Middle School
