At 1:33 PM Monday afternoon, our Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team (WBRT) was requested by the Vermont State Police to assist in locating and bringing a party of six who had become lost on Camels Hump out to safety. Using the lost party's cell phone to pinpoint their location, it was determined the six were off the west side of the Long Trail about halfway up the mountain. WBRT coordinated response for this incident with the Huntington Search and Rescue team and the Camels Hump Backcountry Rescue team, Richmond Rescue. It was decided to launch two rescue efforts. One team would proceed up from the Duxbury side via the Monroe Trail. The second team would ascend from the Huntington side via the Forest City Trail.

At 3:00 PM the lost party reported by cell phone that they had found the Forest City trail and would proceed down it in the direction of Huntington. They had reported they were cold, with little food or water. About 20 minutes later, the rescue team hiking up from Huntington found the lost party and guided them safely back to the base.

Rescuers remind hikers to always bring adequate food, clothing, lighting, and water. It gets dark and cold quickly this time of year. Hikers are also reminded to stay on the established trail networks.

Last evening, the Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team was activated at 6:35 PM by the Vermont State Police(VSP) to assist with a search for a missing juvenile in the Camels Hump backcountry.

A young girl became separated from her family of five after descending ahead of them from the summit. She inadvertently missed the junction for the Monroe Trail and continued northbound onto the Bamforth Ridge/Long Trail. As daylight faded, she became stranded just off the trail by the sudden darkness.

A coordinated response brought together approximately 17 rescuers from Waterbury Backcountry Rescue, Camels Hump Backcountry Rescue, and Huntington Search and Rescue, alongside VSP personnel. Teams entered the woods from multiple points to surround the missing subject.

At 7:33 PM, Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Captain LaRose heard rustling 20 to 30 yards off the trail, called out, and successfully located the girl. She was uninjured, equipped with a headlamp, and safely es**rted down to be reunited with her family before 8:00 PM.

Rescuers maintained cell contact with the father, who was still high on the mountain attempting a descent. Two members of the Camels Hump team ascended to intercept him at 9:22 PM, ensuring his safe es**rt back to the base by 11:00 PM. All units were clear of the incident at 11:17 PM.

This incident serves as a critical reminder of how rapidly trail conditions change when darkness falls. Hikers are strongly encouraged to carry reliable illumination (such as headlamps), remain grouped at major trail junctions, and stay in place if lost or trapped by darkness.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all mutual aid partners for a seamless, highly efficient operation that resulted in a safe outcome for the entire family. Shout out to VSP for smooth overall coordination of this incident.

Just before 13:30 yesterday afternoon, rescuers from our Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team and Worcester Volunteer Fire & Rescue were called out on a report of a 47-year-old female hiker near the summit of Hunger Mountain with an ankle injury.

Less than one hour later, our team established a base in Middlesex at the bottom of the Hayward Trail and sent its first team with rescue gear up the mountain. With assistance from Worcester Rescue, our team sent 15 members up the trail. Descending hikers confirmed the injured person was "near the top" but trying to walk with help.

At 15:30, the first rescue team found the patient, and Waterbury EMTs administered medical care. With the sun setting and temperatures dropping, rescuers assisted the hiker to slowly walk down the trail under her own power. The descent took about one hour with the final distance being covered with the hiker carried in a Stokes litter.

Despite the late hour, and throughout the rescue, unprepared hikers were encountered as they began their hikes in the late afternoon. Our team cautions hikers to always prepare for emergencies.

Last night with light rain and fog, our Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team was called out at 4:41PM on a report of an injured hiker on Hunger Mountain. The 36-year-old hiker from Wisconsin had fallen and injured her ankle. Because of the injury, she was unable to continue and needed to be carried to safety.

15 members of the team responded and in the continuing rain and darkness used a Stokes litter to carry her to the base of the mountain, arriving just before 9 PM. At the base, the hiker declined further medical care and was driven to the UVM Medical Center by a friend. The awaiting ambulance was released, and all units were clear shortly after 9pm.

Backcountry Rescue services are provided at no cost. Interested in supporting our team? https://www.waterburyambulance.org/backcountry-donate.html

A Monumental Milestone for Waterbury Ambulance Service! 🚑🎉

This afternoon, Waterbury Ambulance Service proudly completed its 200th Interfacility Transfer (IFT) of 2026, ending the day at Gifford Medical Center!

This achievement represents countless hours of dedication, planning, teamwork, and commitment to expanding the services we provide to our communities and healthcare partners.

A special thank you goes out to Chief Rounds and EMT Courtney Martin for their hard work in getting the IFT program up and running. Their vision, persistence, and leadership helped turn an idea into a successful and growing program that has already completed 200 transfers in 2026.

EMT Martin will be stepping away from her full-time role next week to pursue new professional opportunities. While we’ll miss seeing her on the transfer truck every day, we’re excited that she’ll continue to jump on both IFTs and 911 calls as her new endeavors allow. Thankfully, this isn’t goodbye—just a new chapter!

Reaching 200 transfers in a single year is a significant milestone for our organization and a testament to the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners who make this work possible every day.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this achievement possible. Here’s to the next 200! 🚑💙

Last night, we hosted a well-attended joint training involving UVM HealthNet in Waterbury. Personnel from Vermont State Police Berlin Barracks, Vermont State Police SAR, Waterbury Vermont Fire Department, and Waterbury Ambulance Service, Inc./ Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team gathered to learn about ground safety and landing zone (LZ) setup. Personnel applied the skills learned in class by setting up an LZ at our pre-determined Waterbury LZ #5 (Farr's Field). Helicopter HealthNet 4 was welcomed on the ground at just after 18:30 for viewing of the aircraft.

We would like to thank UVMHN for the course and for the gift of an LZ kit, which will help illuminate any helicopter landings occurring in our coverage area.

At 14:07 Waterbury Backcountry Rescue Team was dispatched along with our ambulance to the Perry Hill mountain bike trails for a report of a mountain biker with significant injury from downhill fall. Arriving on scene first, Waterbury Ambulance crew members were able to talk with one of the riders in the injured persons party and gave an accurate location that placed the patient deep into the Perry Hill trail network.

Backcountry Rescue members assembled along with our UTV and equipment at the trailhead. A 2-person hasty team was dropped about 3/4 mile from the patient via UTV. Patient contact was made by the hasty team; after completing a medical assessment, the hasty team used a full body splint and prepared the patient for transport.

An additional team of rescuers were shuttled to a closer access point for the incident, Interstate 89, and deployed to the patient. Once the additional rescuers reached the patient, they loaded them into the stokes litter and began the extrication. Given the position on the trail network, the most direct route was to bring the patient down and bushwhack back to the awaiting ambulance on Interstate 89.

Care was transferred to the ambulance crew and rescuers quickly cleared from the interstate. In total 14 backcountry team members participated on the call. The incident was declared complete at 16:45.
