Vermont Huts & Trails

Vermont Huts & Trails The beauty and allure of the Green Mountains have attracted mountain purists from all over the world. The time has come to put Vermont huts on the map.

Our mission is to foster a deeper appreciation of our natural environment and strengthen Vermont’s communities by providing enriching and immersive outdoor experiences for all. Hard-working Vermonters have created remarkable recreational opportunities for locals and tourists to enjoy. Countless trails were created over the years by skiers, mountain bikers, and hikers. Our mission is to take these

individual trail systems and unify them by linking a cohesive network of backcountry accommodations – where huts, cabins, yurts and lodges will exist to enhance our outdoor adventures. Our immediate efforts will be to unify the existing backcountry accommodations in the state. Once that’s completed, we’ll look to create new lodging opportunities to connect the dots in between. This process won’t be easy, but it needs to be done, and that’s what we’re here to do. It will take an enormous amount of statewide and community collaboration to build this network. So, if you operate a backcountry shelter, we’d love to chat with you. If you’re an eager mountain biker or skier, get involved by raising awareness about our efforts.

HUT HIGHLIGHT—Hunger Mountain Hut; Worcester, VT

Whatever your recreational appetite—biking, hiking, chilling—Hunger Mountain Hut serves up hearty helpings.

This true retreat offers four-season usability, access to miles of trails, and room for eight guests. Not to mention off-grid luxuries like a WOOD-FIRED SAUNA, large deck, and four-burner propane stove for cooking your backcountry feasts. Mmm...delicious!

Fun Fact: Hunger Mountain was named around the 19th century after a group of hunters struggled to find food in the area. So make sure you bring plenty of snacks!

Our Chittenden Brook Hut, and surrounding , were already adaptive friendly but we had a couple additional goals to make them more ADA awesome.

First, we wanted to align the hut with the accessibility vision of the Velomont. Previously, if someone arrived at the hut on a bikepacking trip on an adaptive bike, they would've had to have arranged for a wheelchair to be there upon their arrival in order to get in and around the hut. Now, thanks to the newly constructed shed that houses two all-terrain GRIT wheelchairs provided by Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports & U.S. Forest Service , folks can arrive at the hut without any extra planning or outside support.

Second, we created wheelchair access to the fire pit area by building a ramp and a hardened trail from the hut to the fire ring. Previously, if a person were to visit the hut in a wheelchair they would only be able to go as far as the deck overlooking the fire rings, but would not have access to roasted marshmallows; and that stinks.

Recently, we hosted a FOREST retreat with an awesome group from at our Grout Pond Hut. The goals for this retreat were to connect with the outdoors, practice some traditional outdoor skills like fire starting and cooking over fire, learn about the local ecology, how to make safe drinking water, and other hut life skills.

Our FOREST program is an absolutely integral part of our mission of getting more folks outside, more often—especially those who might have as many opportunities to do so as others. Thank you to our incredible partners, like Vermont Adaptive, for helping make these priceless experiences and memories.

We are thrilled to welcome Caitrin to the Vermont Huts & Trails crew as our next Development Director.

Caitrin is a native Vermonter who has called nine different Vermont towns home and still enjoys discovering new corners of the state.

Caitrin brings a couple decades of experience helping non-profits grow through fundraising, strategic planning, organizational leadership, and community engagement—always focused on connecting people to causes they care about, and building the relationships that make ambitious projects possible.

Whether she's planning a fundraising campaign, plotting her next adventure with her husband, or deciding where to plant another row of beans in her garden, she's always happiest working on projects that bring people together and get them outside.

Happy Pride, Hut Lovers. Our favorite thing about the outdoors is that everyone belongs. But we also recognize that not everyone feels welcomed or represented in outdoor recreation spaces. While we continue to work to increase access and inclusion in the outdoors, we want to express our gratitude to some of the amazing organizations in our state ( , , ) who are really making the difference.
