The Puerto Rican Social Club (located later on Baldwin Street) served as vital hub for Waterbury's large growing Puerto Rican community. Established from the late 50s through the 80s, they hosted prominent local salsa bands like Orquesta Optima and Super Trio and others. The old club provided a sanctuary for baptisms, weddings, Sweet 15, and so many cultural celebrations.

During the post-World War II migration boom of the late 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, the earliest grassroots venues for Waterbury's Puerto Rican community were known broadly as "Social Clubs" (Clubes Sociales) and hometown associations, which often operated out of rented storefronts, basements, and local halls before evolving into formal non-profits.

* Last few days Ive drove by and see its being gutted after 3 decades of being abandoned and an eyesore!

* What are your memories of the old club, do you have any pictures?

I am grateful for the Waterbury Fire Department, one of the finest in the country.

I’ve seen their bravery and professionalism firsthand, but it hits differently when they’re responding to a fire right across the street from your home.

Thankful that the residents escaped safely and wishing a speedy recovery to the two firefighters injured in the line of duty. My thoughts are with the displaced family during this difficult time.

Thank you to all our first responders for your dedication and service.

City of Waterbury Launches “Alert Waterbury” Emergency and Community Notification System

(Waterbury, CT) The City of Waterbury has launched Alert Waterbury, a new emergency and community notification system designed to provide residents with timely, reliable information directly from the city.

“During the water main break incidents in October and again in December of 2025, it became clear that the city needed a faster and more direct way to communicate with residents during large scale disruptions,” said Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski Jr. “Alert Waterbury was developed in response to those experiences and will allow us to share accurate, timely information not only during emergencies, but also for important city updates, service changes, and community notifications.”

Alert Waterbury is the city’s official notification platform and is used to communicate quickly and efficiently about situations that impact the Waterbury community. Notifications are sent only to registered users. Signing up for Alert Waterbury is free and voluntary. Residents may choose how they receive notifications by phone call, text message, or email, and can select the types of alerts they wish to receive.

During the sign up process, residents may opt in to one or more alert categories, including:

Public Safety and City Operations
Updates that affect public safety, mobility, access, or critical infrastructure, such as snow bans, road closures, public safety advisories, water service interruptions, extreme weather protocols, and the opening or closure of warming centers or shelters.

City Services and Operational Changes
Information related to changes in city services and schedules, including office closures, trash and recycling collection changes, seasonal services, and departmental schedule adjustments.

City News, Events, and Community Information
Updates that help residents stay informed and engaged, including city announcements, public meetings, tax reminders, library and recreation programs, cultural events, and community initiatives.

Resident privacy is a priority. Contact information provided through Alert Waterbury is used solely for official City of Waterbury communications, is not shared or sold, and is managed through a secure notification system.

Residents can sign up for Alert Waterbury by visiting:
https://waterburyct.org/alerts

Once registered, users may update their contact information and notification preferences at any time.

For questions about Alert Waterbury or for assistance with signing up, residents may call 311 or (203) 597-3444.

02/23/2026

Due to the forecasted winter storm, Mayor Paul Pernerewski has announced the activation of a citywide snow parking ban in Waterbury, effective Sunday, February 22 at 1:00 PM and continuing until further notice.

Forecasts indicate that precipitation will begin Sunday afternoon and is expected to consist primarily of heavy snow. The parking ban is being implemented to allow the Department of Public Works to safely and efficiently clear city streets.

“In preparation for the incoming storm, we are asking all residents to move their vehicles to the even-numbered side of the street or into a city parking garage,” said Mayor Pernerewski. “This will help ensure that our crews can properly plow roadways and maintain safe travel conditions for emergency responders and the public.”

In addition to all posted Snow Zones, there will be NO parking on the odd-numbered side of all city streets for the duration of the ban. Residents are strongly encouraged to utilize private driveways or municipal parking garages instead of parking on the street.

Vehicles parked in violation of the snow parking ban, including those in designated Snow Zones or on the odd-numbered side of streets, may be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

City Parking Garages Available

• Scovill Street Garage
33 Scovill Street
• Buckingham Garage
210 Bank Street

Residents are encouraged to monitor conditions and updates by visiting the city’s official website at www.waterburyct.org.
