In 2025, 9,161 of Waterbury’s 55,284 eligible voters cast a ballot in local elections. That means decisions about our schools, neighborhoods, and city government are being made by a small fraction of residents (17% to be exact!).

The time is NOW for resident involvement and leadership!

Join us for a free 3-day Campaign School and learn how local government works, how decisions get made, and how you can participate and lead.

Across the country, communities are mobilizing in response to escalating immigration raids and arrests that continue to terrorize families and destabilize entire neighborhoods. Here at home, labor, community, and faith organizations recently secured a major victory with the passage of SB-397, Democracy and Government Accountability, officially signed into law by Governor Lamont on May 4th. While many are calling it one of the strongest immigrant protection and government accountability laws in the country, organizers across Connecticut continue working around the clock to provide sanctuary, support, and safety to those under threat.

These moments are not isolated. They are part of a long history of resistance against state violence, racialized policing, and systemic dehumanization.

Next month, Thursday, June 18th, 5:00pm - 7:30pm, we continue our Spring & Summer Learning series with Policing Borders, Policing People: Immigration Enforcement & the Long Arc of State Violence, a panel discussion examining how today’s immigration enforcement is rooted in the enduring legacy of policing, racialized violence, and the carceral state — and why people-powered organizing remains one of our strongest tools for collective defense and resistance.

We’ll hear from leaders at , , and about their experiences on the front lines and what it takes to strengthen our collective capacity to protect our communities.

As organizers, our ability to create better futures is inextricably tied to our study of past events and how their consequences ripple through time.

Known as the Roaring Twenties, the 1920s was a decade characterized by economic prosperity, cultural transformation, and social change, ending with the 1929 stock market crash. It was also a time of significant racial conflict and resistance to established powers of discrimination and segregation.

Next Thursday, May 14th, 5pm - 7:30pm, we kick off our Spring & Summer Learning Series with a step back in time. Using technology to transform decades of black-and-white footage, this episode of America in Color walks us through a vivid, colorized lens of the past and explores how the economic and cultural dynamics of the early 20th century echo into today. Join us for a film screening and discussion about how capitalism structures American life and the lessons history offers for building power in the 21st century.

The People’s Place Growth Center is evolving into a dynamic hub for political education, strategy, and collective learning.

Building on last year’s Fall Learning Series, we are expanding both what and how we offer. This season, we’re introducing panel discussions, film screenings, fireside chats, and facilitated conversations that invite broader participation and position TPP as a public forum for dialogue, study, and exchange.

Across this spring and summer slate, we will explore the systems that shape our lives while grounding each conversation in the practical work of building power locally. Each program is designed to inform and to ask harder questions that challenge our assumptions about where and with whom power resides.

📍May 14 | 5:00pm - 7:30pm
(Film Screening & Discussion) America in Color, The 1920’s

📍Jun 18 | 5:30pm - 7:30pm
(Panel Discussion) Policing Borders, Policing People: Immigration Enforcement & the Long Arc of State Violence

📍Jul 9 | 5:30pm - 7:30pm
(Fireside Chat) Democracy, Socialism, & The United States

📍Aug 20 | 5:30pm - 7:30pm
(Workshop) The Midterm Elections & You

We’ll be sharing more information as we get closer to each program date. In the meantime, scroll through for a sneak peek, register early to secure your spot, and mark your calendars!

✨ MEET OUR FISCALLY SPONSORED PARTNERS!

On this May Day, we are reminded that real change does not arrive on its own. It is built. It comes from organized people acting together, rooted in local power and collective, coordinated action. At The People’s Place, we are committed to providing adaptive, durable infrastructure that is required to support and sustain these efforts.

Beyond financial and operational infrastructure, our fiscal sponsorship program incubates a growing ecosystem of resident leaders, emerging organizers, and movement builders ready and equipped to fight for place and people.

Today, we’re proud to sponsor six projects advancing racial justice, immigrant defense, LGBTQIA+ visibility, civic power, legal strategy, and creative economies for BIPOC artists.

Follow and learn more about how you can be part of the great work happening right here at home:

As our portfolio grows, so does our commitment to building the long-term infrastructure necessary for transformative organizing in Waterbury and across Connecticut.

SUPPORT THE PEOPLE’S PLACE FOR GIVE LOCAL

Next Tuesday and Wednesday, The People’s Place will be participating in Give Local Greater Waterbury and Litchfield Hills — a 36-hour giving event where friends and champions like you can contribute to your favorite non-profit organizations and mission-driven work.

On April 21st and 22nd, we invite our growing community to fuel our ongoing efforts, including:

🌺 Fiscal Sponsorship for emerging organizations
🌺 Growth Center training and development for organizers and social entrepreneurs
🌺 Coworking and flex space for leaders to plan, build, and connect

In a time when division feels easier than unity, we are choosing to build infrastructure for collective power. Your gift today helps create sustainable, justice-driven change in Waterbury and beyond.

If you share this vision, we would be grateful for your support during Give Local. Every contribution, whether $5 or $500, fuels the work of those committed to transforming Waterbury and Connecticut into a place of opportunity, justice, and shared prosperity.
