Cape Horn Conservancy is an all volunteer non-profit dedicated to providing thoughtful stewardship of this trail and surrounding public lands in the Washougal to Stevenson corridor. We work closely with the United States Forest Service (USFS), Washington Trails Association (WTA), and Friends of the Columbia Gorge (FOCG) to maintain and improve the existing trail and to plan for its eventual integr

ation into a Washougal to Stevenson trail system. We have a vision of this trail as a world-class hiking destination, a jewel of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area trail system.

We sure do appreciate board members who don’t mind getting dirty, of course it also helps when they are expert sawyers too!

Many thanks to our own Sean Callaghan for removing a number of downed trees from the Cape Horn Trail this week. Last month’s wind storm was a real doosey, and has impacted many trails throughout the Gorge. Fortunately, for all of us, Cape Horn Trail is still very hikeable.

Remember, a portion of the trail closes February 1st through July 15th to protect peregrine falcon nesting, so there is no time like the present to hike the full 7.2 mile loop!

Eight volunteers raked the section from the Chain Link viewpoint to the SR 14 Pullout, almost three miles roundtrip. We worked hard, had fun and felt a real sense of accomplishment. Lucky for us we finished raking just as it started to rain. Then many of us headed for the Chili Fest!

The trail leading into the Nancy Russell Overlook is almost completely restored to its original glory, thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers who've come out for the last 3 trail work events. Yesterday, folks cheerfully rotated between loading toters, driving toters, unloading toters and spreading the gravel to refurbish the trail.

Also, a note of gratitude to Chinook Trails Association for delivering and allowing the use of their mechanized toters. The progress we've made in both building and maintaining the trail would not have been possible without them.

We continually are impressed by the attitudes and work ethic of volunteers who give of their time, muscle, and good humor to maintain this magnificent trail. You are so appreciated! Thank you all!!

Thank you to ERS, which recently made a significant contribution to the Cape Horn Trail. We moved a huge amount of gravel to refresh the deck at the Nancy Russell Overlook during our August 9 work party. It would have taken our 12 volunteers several days to complete this job, but ERS donated the use of this handy dumper. With a quick tutorial, Adam, one of the newer members of the CHC crew, became the driver, and the rest of us shoveled and raked. Within a few hours, the job was done! CHC is extremely grateful to Kaitlin and Jeff from ERS, and to our dedicated volunteers!

Keith described it best: “People work hard, but they have fun. They’re in this beautiful setting, meeting people and connecting with each other.”
Hats off to our August 9 crew, who worked hard to refresh the re-entry trail off of Rim View Drive and the deck at the Nancy Russell Overlook. It took a hearty crew to prune, grub out the grass overgrowth, haul and rake yards and yards of gravel! So much was accomplished in just a few hours. More of the trail leading to the NRO needs refreshing, so the work continues on Thursday Sept. 11 and Saturday, Oct 4. If you love our trail, please lend a hand! Shoot an email to info@capehornconservancy to learn more.
