Growing into a new space can be scary, but Hermie is braving fresh beginnings! Thanks for the inspiration little buddy.

We had a great visit today from professors and staff at N.C. State University who are touring eastern NC for a few days. Part of NCSU's Community Involvement North Carolina program, the tour is designed to take educators to different parts of the state to learn about projects and programs they might be able to tie into. Thanks so much to Mike Nutt and Bethany Cutts for bringing the group here so we could show them the beauty of the Pamlico and teach them a little about its environmental importance.

There was a time when the Estuarium didn't exist, and the reason it does exist is in large part due to the man pictured here. In the early 1990s Dave McNaught was director of the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation (now Sound Rivers). He had a vision for an educational center devoted to promoting care for the Albemarle-Pamlico estuarine system, and his passion for the project convinced local and state leaders of its viability.

After several years of fundraising and planning the Estuarium opened in 1998, and now 28 years hence we still strive to carry out Dave's vision every day.

But things (and people) around here are getting older, and recently the projector that shows our intro video began failing. This video is special because Dave's voice is the narration - those of us still here who knew Dave love that he maintains this tangible presence nearly 3 decades later. In an effort to ensure we can continue showing the video to our guests, Betsy Hester of the Historic Port of Washington Project sought contributions from friends of Dave to help us get a new projector.

Today that new projector was installed, giving us a much brighter and clearer reminder of the beauty of this area and the man who worked so hard to protect it.

Our deepest thanks go to Betsy and Joe Hester, Dave and Grace Lekson, Dana and Bonnie Eddings, Hester and Tucker Attorneys, Mike and Karen Renn, Richard and Judy Young, Betty Eschenbauch, Gail Baird, Ross and Linda Boyer, Jeffrey and Carol Somol, Ernie and Sara Larkin, and Mary and Mark Mehlich for contributing towards the new projector.

To all who know Dave, and to all who appreciate the Estuarium, please take a minute every day to think about what a healthy Tar-Pamlico River means to you, and what you can do to help keep it that way.
