Main Street Washington MSW works with our community to make the heart of our city thrive. Lend a hand or donate to help us make Downtown Washington where you want to be!

We believe Downtown Washington should be a place that's welcoming & inclusive & bustling with activity! Officially designated in 2008 as a Main Street community in Iowa, MSW employs the National Main Street Center’s Four Point Approach to Downtown Revitalization. Volunteers work in a concerted fashion to enhance the social, physical, and economic well-being of our historic downtown district through comprehensive efforts in the areas of Design, Organization, Promotion, and Economic Vitality. As a not-for-profit, community-driven organization, MSW is supported by public and private investors. Collaborative efforts and strategic partnerships maximize return on investment and create a culturally diverse, economically vibrant, and highly sustainable downtown district. The award-winning MSW program is truly the product of our stakeholders, partners, and volunteers working together toward the community’s vision for downtown.

Grant Wood Pop-Up Gallery
One day only in Downtown Washington, Iowa

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
An eclectic private collection of original Grant Wood art will be on display in downtown Washington for one day only. The Grant Wood Pop-Up Gallery will feature works by the iconic Iowa artist and will be accompanied by a presentation by collector and historian Michael Zahs.

From farm scenes to dinner tables, the art provides a perspective of life in Iowa that many will recognize despite the near century that has passed since their creation. Zahs is known for his work on preserving early film history and artifacts, as seen in the international award-winning documentary Saving Brinton. Now, a portion of a private Grant Wood collection will be brought to the public to share a glimpse of an Iowa icon and how that art provides a view of Iowa’s history with presentation by Zahs.

With approximately 25 pieces under one roof, the pop up gallery offers a rare opportunity to see many creations from Grant Wood in one place. Paintings, book dust covers, illustrations, lithographs, a silver piece, and fabric will be on display at the Washington Public Library.

Attendees will view the gallery throughout the second floor of the library, followed by a brief presentation by Zahs. During the presentation, attendees will have a chance to sample foods crafted with recipes from Grant Wood’s family, including a potato salad he made regularly for Sunday dinners.

The Washington Library Foundation and Main Street Washington are pleased to present this first-of-its-kind event in downtown Washington. Tickets are $30 with proceeds being evenly divided between the Washington Library Foundation and Main Street Washington, which both strive to enrich the community of Washington.

WHEN: 4 p.m. & 7 p.m. Saturday, November 7th, 2026
LOCATION: Washington Public Library, 115 W. Washington St., Washington, IA 52353

We love seeing local students in action! 🔨

We’re so excited to partner with the Kirkwood Washington County Regional Center on a fantastic hands-on project for downtown Washington!

Students in the ACE Academy’s Work-Based Learning class are using their construction skills to build 3-foot and 4-foot holiday trees that will be featured all around downtown this upcoming holiday season. From material estimating and measuring to cutting and assembling, these students are gaining real-world experience while helping make our community look extra festive. 🙌

October is Careers in Construction Month, and we couldn't be prouder to team up with the next generation of builders! Keep an eye out for their amazing work downtown soon. 🎄🔨

For 22 incredible years, Lorraine and the team at Café Dodici have been standard-bearers of warmth, hospitality, and culinary excellence in Downtown Washington. From fine dining at Café Dodici to unique finds at Dodici’s Shop and boutique stays at Dodici’s Night Suites, Lorraine’s vision and dedication have shaped the heart of our downtown district. We are so profoundly grateful for everything she has built and contributed to our community over the last two decades!

As Café Dodici shared recently, Lorraine is beginning the search for the next owner to write the upcoming chapter for this beloved downtown anchor.

To be extra clear: Café Dodici, Dodici’s Shop, and Dodici’s Night Suites are ALL fully OPEN for business! They aren't going anywhere while this search takes place, so please continue to stop in, dine, shop, and support them just as you always have.

➡️ Looking to carry on a incredible legacy??

If you or someone you know has dreamed of owning a premier destination business in Downtown Washington, Lorraine is looking for the right person to take the reins and carry the Dodici legacy forward.

Please reach out directly to Lorraine / Café Dodici for inquiries, and help us spread the word by sharing this post! 🍷

📣 First and foremost: Café Dodici, Dodici’s Shop AND Dodici’s Suites are all OPEN for business! ❤️

We recently sent the letter below via email to many of our customers, and we wanted to share it here as well so we can reach even more people in our community and beyond.

We also realized we need to clarify something very important: this is NOT a closing announcement!
After 22 wonderful years, Lorraine has decided it’s time to begin the process of finding the right person to eventually take the reins and carry the Dodici legacy forward. We are simply starting the search for our next owner.

🍝 Café Dodici is OPEN.☕ Dodici's Shop is OPEN.🛏️ Dodici Night Suites are OPEN.

We’re still here, still serving you, and still looking forward to welcoming you through our doors! This letter is about finding the right person to carry on what Lorraine has built over the past 22 years and write the next chapter of Dodici.

Please read the letter below, and please share this post far and wide. Even if owning Dodici isn’t in your future, you may know someone whose dream it is. ❤️
And in the meantime, come see us—we’re OPEN!
