Every October for more than two decades, Washington's Kiwanis Club has provided each third grader at the W-W Primary School with a personal copy of the Merriam-Webster Student Dictionary. It's an effort to further student literacy as well as celebrating the October birthday of Noah Webster (1758-1843), who published the first American dictionary of the English language in 1828. The original contained more than 70,000 words; the student version has a modest 37,000 but includes pages on subjects like geography and American Sign Language, and the longest word.("Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis", a technical term for the disease silicosis -- 45 letters!)

Kiwanis remembers two very special women in our community who meant so much to our club.
Eleanor Blackmon, married 75 years to our most senior member Steve, passed away last week after a brief illness. In this photo, she sat with her 'fifth child' Raymond Hughes at the Church of the Mediator's pipe organ in May, 2021; she was a lifelong music lover and accomplished keyboardist, and one of the most beloved members of the Washington community.
Paulette George passed away September 10. Paulette was a devoted Kiwanian, and for years provided musical entertainment at our weekly meetings. She was an amazing pianist who had a vast music library in her head. But more than that, she had a sweet demeanor and was quick to make a friend. Paulette and former Kiawanian Dickie Garrard were lifelong friends. She's pictured here on the keyboard with her niece, the multi-talented Lizzie Long (of the Lewis Family) at the annual Kiwanis banquet in 2013.)

Thanks to Amy Johnston and Frances Cowart for their visit to our most recent Kiwanis weekly lunch. Amy is the past president of Rotary and offered some advice on attracting and building new membership; Frances was among the first women invited to join Kiwanis in Thomson decades ago, and was active in the club for a quarter-century.

Since our membership's diminished in numbers and we are temporarily without a permanent meeting venue, Kiwanis have been meeting weekly at various locations. Our longest-serving, most loyal member Steve Blackmon has difficulty attending, so we decided to take the meeting to him. He and his wife Eleanor currently reside at Southern Manor assisted living home, where we held an improptu meeting this week.

Kiwanis celebrates the birthday of one of our long-serving members, Mr. Jimmy Reynolds. He's been a loyal member of the club for decades. Hamilton (his son) and Julia Reynolds came from Atlanta to join the festivities. Mr. Jimmy turned 96 this year, only a few days older than his lifelong friend and fellow member Steve Blackmon, who's been a member since the late 1940s. These two men have been the stalwarts of the club for decades.
