Herbert C. Bonner Scout Reservation

Herbert C. Bonner Scout Reservation The Herbert C. Bonner Scout Reservation is home to Camp Bonner and Camp Hannah Bonner. The Reservation is a few miles east of Washington NC.

Bonner Scout Reservation sits off Harvey Road along Broad Creek in Beaufort County, NC. Within the Reservation are two camping facilities- Camp Hannah Bonner and Camp Bonner. Camp Bonner is a primitive camping area used for the East Carolina Council's annual Camporee. The site contains a few shelters spread throughout the property. Camp Hannah Bonner is less primitive offering a few shelters, dining room building and rustic cabins.

Saturday, August 7, 10:00 A.M at the Hodges Training Center at Camp Boddie, the council will hold the organizational meeting of the Camp Boddie Summer Camp Program Committee. Both older Scouts and adults are invited to be part of this committee. The purpose of the committee will be:

1. Have a subcommittee for each program and administrative area of the camp.
2. Determine the present resources in each of these areas.
3. Determine what resources need to be purchase, built or obtained for each area and merit badge / skill
taught in that area.
4. What can each committee do in their area to make that area more exciting than the same area in any other
camp. For instance, for Environmental Science Merit Badge, the committee might build a camouflaged
observation shelter with bird feeders, corn distributor, flowers and plants that attract animals, tracking pit.
Most camps just send their Scouts out into the woods and they see mostly nothing!
5. Work to have guess speakers who come to a specific merit badge class each week.
6.. Assist in setting up the area prior to staff week. Make it look attractive, inviting and exciting. Many summer
camps I visit are lacking these elements.
7. When possible assist the department head in preparing his staff to teach their merit badges.Make sure they
know their skills and have the resources needed.

As you can see I do not envision a committee that only gives advice. The council needs a committee willing to work year around to insure Camp Boddie has the most challenging and exciting program of any camp. Camp Boddie needs a committee prepared to build memories that Scouts will take home and share with Scouts, making them want to come back and bring others with them. Unless we approach the summer camp program we will not attract troops and youth to our camp this summer. Unless we have a summer camp program this summer, it is hard to envision a summer camp again at Camp Boddie.

If you have the names and contact information for others who want to join in this dream, please invite them to come along and please share their contact information with me.

Yours in Scouting spirit,

We are forming several new council committees. If you have an interest let me know with by emailing me at [email protected] or calling me at 252-686-1952. They are:

Summer Camp Program Committee: This committee will be divided into program and support subcommittees to support each area of camp. For instance trading post, ecology, Scoutcraft, aquatics, etc. we will meet quarterly. The goal will be to have lesson plans, teaching aids and special guest speakers making every merit bad special. Hopefully the staff walk into areas set up and ready to go!!!

Scouts BSA for girls Committee: The purpose will be to locally brand the program as a Boy Scout like program for girls, not coed. The committee will market the program, help organize new programs and support those already existing. Projects could be providing first time campouts including equipment at our camps, identifying grants to reduce membership cost and equipment identifying new charter organizations and help organize née units.

School Access Committee: Assist membership committees in gaining access to students in the classroom for school talks. Organize after school units at school. Find corporate sponsorship for after school units for underserved populations including hiring a leader to run the unit
