Washington Women Outdoors

Washington Women Outdoors WWO is a supportive community of women offering fun, challenging and safe outdoor activities. Who Are We? WWO provides instruction by women for women.

Washington Women Outdoors (WWO) is a non-profit organization that is run almost entirely by volunteers. We engage in outdoor activities in the Washington, DC area where women share skills, experience, strengths, and support to enhance and expand each woman's world. We welcome women of diverse ages, races, and lifestyles. Activities are available for all skill levels to inspire the beginner and to

challenge the more advanced. Who are WWO Members? WWO members are independent women who seek adventure in the outdoors. We have a passion for hiking, biking, rock climbing, caving, backpacking, kayaking, cross country skiing, horseback riding, hang gliding, and anything that tests our strength and broadens our horizons. We enjoy meeting new people who want to travel with us to beautiful places in the wilderness. If you are open to learning new things in a supportive environment and enjoy sharing the outdoors with other women, we invite you to join us. More About WWO's Philosophy and Trips
Our activities help women develop their competence, comfort and natural place in the outdoors. We offer, by example and training, a program for leadership development. We encourage each woman's sense of well-being and power. We enjoy and strive to protect the earth that we share with all living creatures. We scout our hiking and biking trips. Each trip is led by two leaders. One leader stays at the front of the group and the second leader is the sweep. Each participant is encouraged to participate at her own pace, and the sweep is there to ensure that no one is left behind. We want each participant to go at their own pace so that they enjoy their experience and come back to the outdoors.

Weekend backpacking trip in Dolly Sods! We hiked through windswept meadows, navigated rocky trails, and soaked in the kind of silence you only find deep in the wilderness. The highlight? A breathtaking scenic overlook that made every mile worth it — layers of forest stretching endlessly into the horizon. Clouds blocked the stars, but the view more than made up for it. Big thanks to everyone who came out and made it such a fun adventure. Strong women, wild places — exactly what we love.

We loved Grayson Highlands so much in 2024 that we had to go back in 2025! The Grayson Highlands/Mount Rogers Recreation area in southwestern Virginia is one of our favorite destinations, even though it can be a tough hike. Our three days included lots of elevation change, some rainy weather, more beautiful weather, lots of ponies and long-horned cattle, beautiful vistas and a fabulous sunset.

It was a beautiful weekend in the St. Mary’s Wilderness with the WWO! The St. Mary’s waterfall is a super popular destination, but - after a substantial climb uphill - we found a secluded, perfect spot to camp right next to the river.

A very nice morning at Scott's Run today. Although the parking lot was full, the trail was quiet and peaceful. The waterfall was flowing beautifully-no crowds, just the sound of cascading water.

Had a wonderful evening with those who braved the stormy forecast to join us for a beautiful sunset paddle at Pohick Bay Regional Park! 🌅🚣‍♀️ The skies cleared just in time for a magical evening on the water. Grateful for this adventurous crew! 💙🌊

It was a perfect weekend to be at Dolly Sods for a little backpacking! This weekend we enjoyed one of our favorite trips to the Rohrbaugh Cliffs. The mountain laurel were in bloom (along with a few rhododendron), the sunset was lovely, and the company was spectacular.

Yesterday we came together for a great introduction to archery class. Thank you to everyone who came out despite the rain. We had a great time learning new skills and cheering each other. We even had a little friendly competition and Alex emerged victorious!

Had a great time yesterday with these gals at Prince William Forest Park. Thank you for coming out in the rainy weather. We'll have to return in Sept when the Pawpaw's are ripe.

We had a great time hosting a booth at the Loudoun Appalachian Trail Festival on Saturday. This was our 2nd year participating and it was a pleasure meeting so many like-minded people and hearing them share their experiences in the outdoors and organizations caring for the environment. Always a learning experience. A big thank you to Peggie, Polly, Susan, Amy, Karen, and Babs for their time and contribution at the booth.
