Come and join us at one of our meetings and experience what we do. We meet the third Wednesday of every month, except the month of February, at the Washington Volunteer Fire & Rescue Hall. Pre-meeting social time is at 1:00 pm; the business meeting starts at 1:30 pm, and our programs begin at 2:00 pm. For more information email us at: [email protected]

Our September 16th meeting is a walk in the park—a field trip to the Rappahannock County Park, that is. Environmentalists Bonnie Beers and Mike Wenger will lead us through the park and talk about the work that has been done to remove invasive plants and replace them with natives. The walk begins at 11, and will be followed by a sack lunch picnic at the pavilion. Wear sturdy shoes and bring your own lunch and water bottle. Some of the trails are sloped and/or have steps, so plan accordingly.

Garden pests. Grrr! They can drive you crazy! Tim Ohlwiler, the Virginia Cooperative Extension Agent for Horticulture in Fauquier County is going to talk with us about five common garden pests and ideas for their management. He’s also going to highlight the new, invasive box tree moth so that we can recognize this boxwood loving pest.

Join us at 1:00 on Wednesday, August 19 for this interesting and informative discussion at the Washington, Va firehall. But leave your garden pests at home. 😉

July Program: Wednesday, July 15 at 1:00 pm at the Fire Hall in Washington, VA (10 Firehouse Lane).

We are delighted to host Pam DeBergh for our program this month. To celebrate our 250th birthday, Pam will be demonstrating arrangements in the Federal style, from the early days of our nation. The Federal style is a beautiful, symmetrical, cone-shaped design with lots of flowers that emphasize favorites of the ancient world, in footed or pedestal vases, urns, baskets, silver or metal containers.

Pam has had her fingers in the dirt since early childhood, and has been a garden club member for 33 years, including serving twice as president of the Winchester-Clarke Garden Club! She is a certified Horticulture Judge for the Garden Club of America, as well as the Garden Club of Virginia, and has judged at the Chicago Botanical Garden Flower Show and at the Atlanta Botanical Garden Flower Show.

As Pam says of herself, “I enjoy growing, showing, and arranging with flowers.” We are looking forward to having her join us!

Do you have a vegetable garden and have questions, or want one but aren't sure where to start? Join us this Wednesday, May 20th, at 1:00 pm in the Washington, Va Fire Hall for a program on growing vegetables.

Just in time for spring planting, we are pleased to have Rapidan River Master Gardeners Larry Baker and Greg Alexiou present “Some Dos and Don’ts for Beginning Vegetable Gardeners,” at our May 20th meeting. They will cover plant choices, watering practices, soil factors, energy requirements, practical considerations, and hold a question-and-answer session as time permits.

Both Larry and Greg have volunteered for many years to work in the Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension Carver Center demonstration garden in Culpeper. This garden was founded as part of a 2018 Small Farm Outreach Program and The Carver Center to develop an incubator farm and demonstration site to serve farmers in and around Culpeper County. The garden is a two-acre field plot with two hoop greenhouses and features a large variety of vegetable plant demonstrations, training workshops, and public events.

Join us on Wednesday, March 18 for a program on Fascinating Fungi with Bill Bynum at the Fire Hall in Washington, VA. The program will begin about 1:00, following a brief business meeting. We're looking forward to this--it promises to be very interesting!

Bill Bynum is an amateur mycologist, living in Rappahannock County since 2016. He first became interested in fungi in 2005 when curiosity about an intriguing mushroom growing in his yard led him to join the Connecticut Valley Mycological Society(CVMS). Attending the club’s weekly forays, he began to learn about all sorts of fungi that were collected and discussed by experts. Bill was CVMS President and a Trustee for the North American Mycological Association. Bill and his partner Madlyn have enjoyed walks in the Virginia woods and have been surprised and happy to find morels in much greater numbers than ever found in Connecticut. Bill has presented Introduction to Mycology programs featuring his own photographs for many public mushroom events, garden clubs, libraries, and Virginia Master Naturalist training classes.

Thank you to all of our friends and neighbors who came out to the Seed Swap yesterday at the Rappahannock County Library. There was a great turnout, and we especially love seeing our youngest gardeners getting excited about growing things! One young lady told me she plans to be a botanist--excellent!

And a big thank you to the PATH Foundation for the grant that made this possible.

Sheila Advani is a noted Ikebana instructor. This is her fourth visit to RCGC and her workshops are always popular. Join us on the 21st at 1:00 for a demonstration. She will create three or four arrangements for everyone to enjoy.

Orders will be available for pickup at the Little Washington Fire Hall at the following times:

TOMORROW: Thursday, December 4 10:00am -2:00pm
