💡Fund Spotlight💡

The Give Back Fund, a Swartzentruber family-inspired donor-advised fund, was established by Grant and Emily Swartzentruber to support the future of Daviess County. Through this fund, the Swartzentruber family hopes to invest in charitable programs that encourage young people to build their lives and careers close to home, strengthening the community that shaped them.

“Through the help of this fund, our hope is that young people in our community will come to see the benefit of staying close to their roots while contributing to their hometown through their talents and raising their own family in the place where they themselves were nurtured and brought up,” says Grant.

Donor-advised funds are a powerful way for individuals and families to be involved in how their gift is used to support charitable causes and organizations. Donors can establish both permanent and non-permanent donor-advised funds with Our Community Foundation. Donors recommend grants to qualified nonprofits. Our Community Foundation is available to help identify organizations that are working to address the causes donors care about most. The Foundation handles all the background work, making sure that nonprofits are in good standing. A donor’s recommendation is presented to the Foundation Board for approval and then grants are distributed. Donor advised funds are great for individuals, families, and businesses.

The greatest benefit of establishing a donor-advised fund with Our Community Foundation is that the Foundation is a local organization with local leadership and a mission to serve Daviess County. The small fee associated with administering donor-advised fund fuels continued good work in our local community. A donor-advised fund may be established with the Foundation over time. The fund’s grantmaking process begins when donations reach $10,000.

🍎 Calling All Daviess County Teachers! ✏️

We are currently accepting applications for the Teacher Innovator Grant Program!
Grants of up to $250 are available to help bring creative, hands-on learning experiences to your classroom. We believe that providing grants to teachers for innovative in-school or in-class projects is a strategic investment in the education of Daviess County youth.

🎥 In this video, you'll see just a few of last year's funded projects, including "That's Not My Monster," "Math in Weather," and "Molding the Minds." These are just a few examples of how teachers are creating engaging learning opportunities with support from the Foundation.

💡Fund Spotlight💡

The Alan and Vicki Bubalo Family Endowment is a donor-advised endowment established in 2022 by Alan and Vicki Bubalo to respond to changing needs in the community. This endowed fund reflects the Bubalo family’s commitment to our community by supporting local nonprofit organizations and charitable causes here in Daviess County.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. We have been blessed to live in Daviess County, which has provided our livelihood, and it has always been our desire to give back as much as we can,” said the Bubalos. “We established a couple of funds through our family and the Edward Jones Achievement Fund because we believe in leaving a legacy for those in Daviess County—and we hope others will follow in our footsteps and do the same in the future.”

Gifts to this endowment are invested for long-term growth, allowing grant distributions in the years ahead that will continue the family’s legacy of generosity and community impact forever.

Donor-advised funds allow donors to have ongoing involvement in how their gift is used to support charitable causes. Donors recommend grants to qualified nonprofits. We are available to help donors identify nonprofits working to address the issues and needs they care about most. We also handle all due diligence, ensuring nonprofits are in good standing. Recommendations are submitted to our board for approval; we then distribute grant dollars. Donor advised funds are great for individuals, families, and businesses.

Today we celebrate National Nonprofit Day and the incredible organizations that make Daviess County a stronger community.

Observed each year on August 17, National Nonprofit Day recognizes the important role nonprofits play in improving lives and strengthening communities.

At Our Community Foundation, we're proud to support many local nonprofits serving Daviess County. From meeting basic needs to enriching lives and creating opportunities, their work makes a lasting difference every day.

Our Community Foundation recently awarded a grant to Washington Community Schools through the WHS Class of 1971 Legacy Fund, continuing the class’s commitment to giving back to its alma mater.

The grant was presented just prior to the Class of 1971’s 55th reunion, celebrated this past weekend in Washington.
As part of the reunion weekend, classmates gathered at the Daviess County Museum to celebrate the fund’s progress and the impact their generosity is making at Washington Community Schools.

Washington Community Schools Superintendent Kevin Frank spoke with the group about projects and initiatives supported by grants from the Class of 1971 Legacy Fund. He thanked class members for their support of the school’s playground project and four other efforts that help provide opportunities for students throughout the district.

The following afternoon, Tori Peterson led class members on a tour of the high school, giving them an opportunity not only to look back and reminisce about their own school years, but also to see firsthand the difference their support is making for today’s students.

“What makes me most proud isn’t just how much the fund has grown, but that our classmates built it together. Fifty-five years after we graduated, we’re still connected to Washington and still finding ways to give something back,” said Doug Lemmon, a member of the WHS Class of 1971 and an advisor to the Legacy Fund. The WHS Class of 1971 Legacy Fund is funded entirely through classmate donations. It was the first legacy fund established by a Washington High School graduating class.

“When you gather for a reunion like this, it’s natural to look back—to remember teachers who influenced you, classmates who became lifelong friends, and experiences that helped shape who you are today,” said Chris Jarrett, Executive Director of Our Community Foundation. “But what impresses me most about this class is that they haven’t stopped looking forward. Through the Class of 1971 Legacy Fund at Our Community Foundation, they have chosen to make sure future generations of students benefit from the same school and community that meant so much to them.”

The Class of 1971’s example is also inspiring other Washington High School alumni to consider how they can create a lasting impact. The Class of 1991 recently established the WHS Class of ’91 Hatchet Legacy Fund, with hopes of building on the spirit of generosity demonstrated by the Class of 1971.

“The wonderful thing about an endowed legacy fund is that it isn’t just about today,” Jarrett added. “Every gift strengthens a permanent resource that can continue supporting the school for generations. Long after this reunion is over—and long after future reunions are held—the Class of 1971 will still be making an impact.”
