Affirmation DC will hold the annual Pioneer Day (Summer) Picnic on Sunday, August 6 from 3 to 7 pm at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria. This is the same spot as past year's. The National Portrait Gallery is Seeking Volunteers for Performance Art Piece:

Artist Jeffrey Gibson will premiere a new commissioned performance piece 'To Name An Other' at the National Portrait Gallery on May 22 at 5pm in the museum’s Kogod Courtyard. This will be Gibson’s largest performance to date.

His performance will feature 50 volunteer performers who self-identify as a person of color, LGBT, and/or Indigenous or Native American. Jeffrey Gibson will also take part as an MC of the performance. One by one each volunteer, who will wear a textile made by the artist, will step into a spotlight and speak a “name” given to them by Jeffrey into a microphone and then will begin drumming*.

Schedule: May 22, 2019

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Volunteers have a walk through with artist Jeffrey Gibson

4:00 p.m. Volunteers arrive for 5:00 p.m. performance
Each volunteer will will receive a stipend of $50 from the artist as a thank you for your participation.

* Volunteers do not need previous music or drumming experience.

We had a big turn out, the weather was breezy, and a handful of new folks at yesterday's Pioneer Day BBQ--big success! Thanks to everyone who made it and to Olin for the fantastic organization!

See you this Sunday!! Annual Pioneer Day Picnic at historic Fort Ward Park in Alexandria on Sunday July 1 from 3-7 PM. We'll be in picnic area #4.

The Washington DC Affirmation Chapter will provide hot dogs, burgers, bread, condiments, watermelon and beverages. Please bring side dishes, salads & desserts. You may bring anything else you prefer to grill also, such as veggie burgers or steaks.

Even if you have other plans, just drop by to socialize for a while. The event will only be cancelled for prolonged, severe weather. Call Olin (703-864-5527) if you need an update. All are welcome to attend—bring the kids!
