Health Volunteers Overseas

Health Volunteers Overseas We see a world where all people have access to health care delivered by local health professionals.

HVO is dedicated to improving the availability and quality of health care through the education, training and professional development of the health workforce in resource-scarce countries. Our goal at HVO is not only to train new health care professionals, but also to encourage and to sustain current health workers so that they can continue to practice in their home countries where their skills ar

e most urgently needed. HVO accomplishes its mission by sending highly-qualified and committed health care professionals on short-term assignments to more than 80 projects world-wide. HVO volunteers teach, guide curriculum design, influence national health policy and promote realistic health interventions using appropriate technology.

HVO volunteers Ms. Robin Naden-Semba and Dr. Janet Dewan attended the 15th World Congress of Nurse Anesthetists in Australia in early May where they submitted a poster on the history of HVO’s nurse anesthesia program.

Ms. Naden-Semba said, “I think the conference was a huge success; it was great meeting new people and hearing their stories. We are trying to encourage the new generation of anesthetists! It was an honor to represent HVO, and we had lots of people stop at the poster.”

"In January, I had the privilege of traveling to Vietnam to deliver a series of teaching sessions on nursing diagnosis, cancer management and palliative care...This trip reinforced how global collaboration in health care can catalyze meaningful change. Despite resource limitations, the enthusiasm and dedication of Vietnamese professionals were inspiring. There’s a growing recognition that quality cancer care must include pain control, psychosocial support, and spiritual care — not as optional, but as integral elements of treatment. My time in Vietnam was not only educational but profoundly humbling. It underscored the universal truth that while technologies and systems differ, the heart of healthcare remains the same: a commitment to relieve suffering and promote dignity." -Linda Johnson DNP, AG-ACNP, BC

"It took about a week before the students warmed up to me. I would get to the lecture early and sit under a gazebo outside the classroom. A few brave students started to sit with me and we had some good conversations about medical training and experiences in our countries. When I asked for suggestions about what they wanted to hear, they all requested 'stories from when I was a student.'" - Dr. Adam Mitchell, internal medicine, Nepal

“It was an eye-opening experience for the residents to see how important a physical exam is and a great teaching moment on a whole category of patients..” – Dr. Robert Erdin, orthopaedics, Tanzania

Shurahbil, a five-year-old patient, came in with a femur fracture and was incorrectly labeled with cerebral palsy rather than spina bifida. That misdiagnosis could have changed everything for this child. Instead, a trained HVO volunteer, Dr. Virginia Casey, recognized the signs immediately, avoiding unnecessary surgery and ensuring the right treatment.

And, in that moment, the residency class at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center learned more about how to treat patients like Shurahbil.

That’s how training transforms care.

Donate today to help train more providers and expand life-saving training around the world.
