The closure of the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) raises serious concerns for multilingual learners and educators across the country 📚🌎

OELA has provided resources and guidance to support over five million English learners and help schools meet their responsibilities under Title III and civil rights laws 🏫✨

Without dedicated federal support, schools could face funding disruptions, fewer resources, and reduced support for bilingual education programs ⚖️

Supporting multilingual learners means investing in equity, opportunity, and success for all students 💛

Workers at a New Jersey detention center say they are being “treated like animals” and are engaged in a work stoppage and hunger strike. Here are their demands. Article is linked in the comments.

Dismantling the legal machinery that allows for the cruelty of detention to persist begins with solidarity. Community members protesting outside the grounds of Delaney Hall -- an ICE jail operated by the private prison company Geo Group in Newark, New Jersey -- are doing just that by showing up, exercising their First Amendment rights, and standing firm with the hundreds of immigrant detainees holding a hunger and labor strike for nearly two weeks.

Make no mistake: Just as we saw in Minnesota last year, we will undoubtedly see news stories smear the unarmed demonstrators as unruly agitators confronted by the tactical-gear-clad officers deploying tear gas and rubber bullets to clear paths for vans transporting human beings by force. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) forgets that community members on the ground also have cameras and smartphones. Real time accounts are telling the world the true story -- and we should be angry at what is unfolding. From the cooperation of local law enforcement agencies to act as a violent security buffer for DHS to federal lawmakers consistently finding more taxpayer money to expand detention centers like this one.

Brutal state repression is on display both inside and outside Delaney Hall and the latter should not distract us from the former. Listen to the horror stories detainees are sharing about Delaney Hall and remember that for-profit detention centers across the country like this one are quickly being erected to house more fathers, mothers, and children separated from their families. All while record-breaking summer heat is on the horizon.

We stand in solidarity with immigrant detainees and their families, from Newark to Adelanto. Free them all.
