What happens behind slaughterhouse doors shouldn’t stay hidden.

In a new New York Times Opinion piece, Nicholas Kristof examines undercover footage captured by Animal Outlook inside a chicken slaughterhouse and asks us to confront the suffering built into industrial meat production.

The disturbing part? What’s documented is presented as business as usual.

A food system that treats animals as disposable and prioritizes production speed over their welfare needs more than a public relations makeover. It needs accountability.

“Sustainable” seafood should live up to its label. 🐟

For generations, communities in Downeast Maine have depended on clean waters and wild fish. This video highlights what’s at stake as industrial salmon farming corporations like Cooke Aquaculture threaten those waters, local fisheries, and the livelihoods connected to them.

Cooke is also a major supplier of Hannaford’s farmed salmon, which the grocery chain aggressively markets as sustainable.

Today, we announced a lawsuit alongside FarmSTAND and our legal partners challenging Hannaford and its parent company’s allegedly deceptive marketing.

The complaint details pollution, harmful chemical use, and mass fish deaths linked to the industrial farms supplying its salmon.

Shoppers deserve honest information. Fishing communities deserve clean water. And “sustainable” should mean more than a marketing claim.

But an investigation by Inside Climate News and The Outlaw Ocean Project reveals the costs behind industrial fish farming, from depleted wild fish populations and polluted waters to forced labor and harm to coastal communities.

Farmed seafood is often marketed as a sustainable solution to overfishing. But what happens along the way to our plates?

A new investigation by Ian Urbina for The New York Times, reported by The Outlaw Ocean Project, follows the industrial aquaculture supply chain and exposes costs that sustainability claims too often leave out.

The reporting documents destructive and illegal fishing, forced labor and deadly working conditions, pollution from fishmeal factories, and coastal communities losing fish they depend on for food and livelihoods.

At the farms themselves, waste can smother marine life, crowded conditions fuel disease and parasites, and chemicals used in production raise environmental and food safety concerns. By the time seafood reaches stores and restaurants, those harms are largely invisible to consumers.

Our oceans deserve better than an industry that puts marine life, workers, and coastal communities at risk.

For more than 50 years, the Endangered Species Act has helped prevent the extinction of 99% of the species under its protection. 🦋

Now, the Trump administration is working to weaken this critical law as wildlife faces mounting threats from industrial agriculture, toxic pesticides, and habitat destruction.

Monarch butterflies and other vulnerable pollinators need stronger protections. Weakening the law puts their habitats and food sources at even greater risk.

Congress must act now to defend the ESA, protect science from political interference, and ensure endangered species get the protections they need before it’s too late. 🌱
