What can Rock Creek tell us about the health of our ecosystem?

Squad members collected and tested water from Rock Creek, making observations of the “angry” and “murky” water. We even used water testing kits to see if the water was healthy and drinkable. Spoiler alert! Don’t drink the water.

Rock Creek is a tributary of the Potomac River, connecting our local ecosystem to a much larger watershed that supplies drinking water to millions of people. We learned that even small changes in a stream can tell us a lot about the health of the environment around us!

Every observation helps us piece together the bigger picture of ecosystem health. What happens upstream can affect the plants, animals, and people downstream, reminding us that protecting our waterways starts right in our own backyards!

Engineers aren't just human!

Beavers are nature's own engineers, building lodges for shelter and dams that can change the flow of water across a landscape. After visiting the Kenilworth marsh – home to many beavers – Squad members put their own engineering skills to the test by designing and building lodges and dams inspired by these incredible animals.

Did you know? A beaver’s broad, flat tail acts like a kickstand, helping it balance while sitting upright on land! And their lodges often have underwater entrances, providing a sneaky way in and out while helping keep predators like coyotes at bay.

Squad members hit the trails on Tuesday for a ranger-led adventure packed with fascinating facts about Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Ranger Tom shared his knowledge of the history of the park, showed us active evidence of beavers, and introduced us to one of nature’s coolest tricks: jewelweed seed pods that burst open when touched!

A huge thank-you to Ranger Tom for sharing his time and expertise with our curious crew! We love learning from the people who help protect and care for our parks.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Squad members explored the history of the Nacotchtank people and learned about dugout canoes, an important technology used by Indigenous peoples to travel and trade along waterways.

Did you know that the name Nacotchtank comes from the Algonquian term anaquashtank, which means “a town of traders?” The Nacotchtank lived along the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers, where waterways served as important routes for travel and trade. They exchanged goods, including beaver pelts, with neighboring communities and European settlers.

Traditionally, dugout canoes were made by hollowing out a tree trunk, often using fire to help burn away the wood before carving out the inside.

Squad members tried their hand at this traditional technique by carving their own miniature dugout canoes out of soap, then they tested whether or not their canoes would sink or float in water!

We loved celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day by getting outside and learning about the indigenous people who have called the DC area home for generations.
