How does pollution affect plants and animals?

As part of the Nature Near School’s program, 4th graders at DC Prep’s Edgewood campus tackled that very question with their Student Action Projects!

They created comic strips and informative videos to teach their community all about how pollution and littering impact the plants and animals in the Anacostia watershed and what we can do to help!

Trash monsters? Don’t let that be you!

Students at DC Prep’s Edgewood campus turned trash talk into action, creating comic strips that show how we can clean up our act and protect our watershed.

From planting and harvesting to preparing fresh food together, students at Sousa Middle School are getting hands-on with science, teamwork, and outdoor learning through Urban Adventure Squad’s pilot project, “Building a Culture of Outdoor Learning in the DC Public School System”

This work is made possible with support from foundations and individual donors and we have so much more to do! This spring, middle school students are rehabilitating their school’s garden beds while exploring plant science, food systems, and food preparation firsthand.

Please consider supporting our efforts to bring meaningful outdoor learning experiences to life.

Last night at Politics and Prose Bookstore, Urban Adventure Squad Board member Dr. Kim Martin interviewed her cousin, Dr. Lerone Martin, author of the new book, "Young King: The Making of Martin Luther King, Jr."

As one audience member pointed out, there were two Dr. Martins, but only one of them was wearing Doc Martens. (It was Kim🔥🔥🔥).

Lerone is the Martin Luther King, Jr., Centennial Professor in Religious Studies and Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University (https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu).

Kim has spent a career in education, including as a high school principal, instructional superintendent, and district leader in both traditional public and charter school systems. She currently serves as Deputy Chief of School Transformation at KIPP DC.

Our board members give us so much support in so many ways, and we love supporting their adventures! You can read more about our Board here: www.urbanadventuresquad.org/uas-board

How does human behavior impact the Anacostia Watershed?

As part of the Nature Near Schools program, our 4th graders at DC Prep Edgewood took action to protect their local watershed.

Students designed a Student Action Project, focusing on ways our community can help care for our environment. One class chose to get creative by making comic strips, and producing a series of educational videos to share simple, meaningful ways to protect the watershed.

From reducing pollution to protecting our waterways, these students are using their voices to inspire real change. We’re proud of their creativity, teamwork, and commitment to making a difference. Watch the first video in their series and be on the lookout for more from DC Prep’s 4th graders!

It's a VERY special milestone day for our wonderful director of programming, Christy Brock, who turns 40 TODAY!

Christy has made the Squad an incredibly special, welcoming, joyful place for our staff, for children and their families, for educators across the city, and a beautiful network of people of all ages who love, support, and partner with the Squad.

Christy oversees our in-school and out-of-school curriculum and programming, and manages partnerships with schools, community organizations, and other nonprofits. Because of Christy, thousands of children know their neighborhood trees, birds, waterways, history, and hiking trails, and now see our local national parks and majestic green spaces as their backyard. She has played a critical role in raising our next generation of environmental stewards in DC and in making a part of our communities and our public education system.

Happy Birthday, Christy!
