Term limits would put more emphasis on merit. What matters more in Congress: what you bring to the table, or how long you’ve been sitting there?

Public servants shouldn't come with strings attached. Every extra term gives special interests more time to tie them on.

If you were a lobbyist, would you want to have to start from scratch every few terms?

No one should need decades in Washington to leave a mark. Serve. Accomplish. Make a difference. Then pass the torch.

In 2016, John Ryan, now mayor of Alsip, helped lead the push for a three term limit. More than 80% of voters approved it.

Now, with Ryan serving his third term as mayor, voters are being asked whether that limit should be extended to four terms. If it passes, he could run again.

It's a local example of why limits on time in office matter. We believe the same applies to Congress.

Thomas Sowell is an economist and author who has written extensively about government, and political incentives. He believed that a career in Congress was not meant to last a lifetime. Term limits address the real problem one that is a structural issue. Do you think term limits would improve Congress?

Changing Congress starts with changing the incentives in the system. Term limits can help put more emphasis on making an difference in the present, rather than campaigning for what comes next. Do you agree?

Public service should begin and end in the same place focused on the needs of the people you came to represent.

09/20/2026

Congress was meant to be public service, not a permanent way of life. But when there is no limit on terms, the perks and privileges of Washington can become part of the routine, and some lawmakers retire in spirit long before they retire from office. Term limits help keep service temporary and accountable.

The longer lawmakers stay in Washington, the more time special interests have to build relationships and influence around them. And those relationships can become valuable to lawmakers too, expanding the networks and access that come with years in office. Congressional term limits would bring regular turnover and make entrenched influence harder to build on both sides.
